A NEW LIFE

It was around 7 in the morning during my second semester exam when I started hearing people running and shouting outside my room.

I did not want to take it seriously at first because my hostel was always noisy, Every morning there was one noise or the other.

“Let’s go and see what’s happening.” My roommate ran outside and we followed. “What’s happening?”

“Someone’s giving birth.”

“Giving birth?” They were all running upstairs so I followed.

I knew the girl in question. She was a final year student, she was already married though, I'd spoken to her once or twice before. Her room was at the top floor while mine was at the middle floor.

The hostel was rowdy, the girls came out of their rooms looking for one way or the other to gossip. But why would they gossip about someone whose life was in danger.

We informed the porters about it and they rushed over to the medical center not too far from our hostel to get the nurses.

One thing I don't like about the medical center is that they take too long to attend to someone, even if it was a life or death situation.

It took time about another 10 minutes before they arrived. They asked for the girls who wanted to film and gossip to leave as the baby didn't need to be on a rowdy place.

That was the first time I even saw that much blood in my life, it didn’t feel real at all. I was very scared.

The nurses were quick to attend to them and wrapped the baby in a yellow wrapper. It was a baby girl. She was so small. I'd seen her little form wrapped in the wrapper as they carried her past me.

My heart beat rapidly in my chest, I wondered why they had carried only the baby out. I didn't want to think of the worse.

"Why did they carry only the baby? What about the mother?" Everyone asked amongst themselves. I had a paper that morning, but I wanted to see if the mother was okay before I left.

The nurses came back and we all watched as they helped her down. We all yelled and cheered as she walked down, she had been really strong. They took her to the medical center.

I was sure what had happened was going to be the talk of the hostel for the next few days. Even felt too serious that morning.

I had planned to revise my books again that morning, but I couldn't focus on anything. Around afternoon, I was back from the exam hall. I heard that the nurses room her to a hospital outside the campus because she had lost a lot of blood.

After she was discharged a few days later she came to the hostel to get her things. Her husband and mother came along with her to get her things. I respected mothers even more as of that day.

Life can really surprise you at any time. It's about holding on and surviving.

A situation that seemed very dangerous for both the baby and the mother, but luckily everything worked out for both. Mothers are the strongest beings in this world.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Good day.
