I walked into the bedroom this morning to discover this:

Cyle was asleep on my side. Cot ……..

…..was pretty much in the same position but on @silvertop’s side.

Here’s a closer look at both. 😻

I went on to do some work on the computer as well as some laundry. A few hours later, I went back into the bedroom. This is what I found.

……still sleeping on my side of the bed, while Cot was……..

…..still sleeping on @silvertop’s side! They’d barely moved! Is that all they do?

Typically, cats need 16-20 hours of sleep! Why? I asked GROK. Here’s what it had to say:

Cats sleep so much because they’re crepuscular predators, naturally wired to conserve energy for hunting during dawn and dusk. Their high sleep needs stem from:
• Energy Conservation: In the wild, cats expend intense energy in short bursts to chase prey, so long naps recharge them.
• Metabolism: Cats have a high metabolic rate, and sleep helps regulate energy use and supports bodily functions like tissue repair.
• Instinct: Even domestic cats retain wild instincts, sleeping to stay alert for opportunistic hunting or play.
• Age and Lifestyle: Kittens and seniors sleep more due to growth or reduced stamina, while indoor cats may sleep out of boredom.
Unlike humans, their frequent catnaps (polyphasic sleep) spread rest across the day, making it seem like they sleep even more.

Seems like sleeping is what my kitty boys are excellent at, lol!

The other day, I came home from work seriously stressed. Cot was on the bed when I walked into the bedroom and as I approached him, I could see him ‘tune in’ to me. He was immediately concerned and became very clingy and affectionate. I asked GROK about whether cats can sense emotions. Here’s what it said:

Yes, cats can sense human emotions to some extent. They pick up on cues like facial expressions, tone of voice, body language, and even chemical changes in our scent (e.g., stress hormones). Studies and anecdotal evidence suggest:

I knew Cot understood and it was sweet the way he reacted. I asked another question: do cats offer emotional support? GROK responded:

• Physical Presence: A cat’s purring, warmth, or cuddling can reduce stress and anxiety. Studies, like one from 2019 in Psychological Medicine, show pet interaction (including cats) can lower cortisol levels and boost oxytocin, promoting calm.
• Routine and Companionship: Cats provide predictability and companionship, which can stabilize mood, especially for people with depression or loneliness.
• Sensing Emotions: As mentioned earlier, cats pick up on emotional cues (tone, body language, scent) and may respond by staying close, purring, or nuzzling, which can feel supportive.
• Individual Differences: Some cats are more affectionate and attuned, acting as informal emotional support animals. Breeds like Ragdolls or Siamese are often more social, but any cat with a strong bond can fill this role.

I do love and enjoy my kitties! I cannot imagine our home without one! Plus, they can be extremely entertaining!
