The Things That Almost Broke Me Taught Me the Most

Life is a teacher, the more we live the more we learn.
I don’t know if this happens to everyone, but there are certain moments in my life that still replay in my head like they happened yesterday. Not the big celebrations or happy days, but the ones where I almost gave up. The ones where everything felt like too much. Funny thing is, those exact moments that nearly broke me, ended up teaching me the most.
I remember a time when everything felt stuck. I was showing up every day, doing what I was supposed to do, but deep down I felt like I was going nowhere. I didn’t feel seen, didn’t feel like my efforts were amounting to anything. Some days I would smile just to avoid questions, but inside I was exhausted, not physically, but emotionally and mentally.
People don’t always notice when you’re carrying too much. Most of us have become good at hiding the weight we carry. We laugh, we post nice pictures, we reply "I’m fine" when we’re not. And I don’t blame anyone really, it’s just how the world is now. Fast-paced, always moving, rarely slowing down to check if people are really okay.
But the truth is, I wasn’t okay. And for a long time I didn’t even know how to explain it to anyone. It wasn’t about one thing, just a bunch of little things piling up, one after the other, till I didn’t recognize myself anymore.
Then one random day, I did something that surprised even me. I stopped trying to be okay. I wrote everything down, I prayed, I cried. And weirdly, that was the beginning of healing for me.
See, we think being strong means holding it all in. But I’ve come to realise that true strength is being real with yourself. It’s admitting that you're tired. It’s asking for help when you need it. It’s allowing yourself to pause without feeling like a failure.
And from that place, I started to slowly rebuild myself. I didn’t wake up the next day suddenly healed. But I started giving myself more grace. I stopped comparing my journey to others. I learned how to enjoy small wins again. Even just getting out of bed felt like an achievement some days. And that’s okay.
What I’ve learned is, nobody really has life all figured out. Even the people you admire are battling something behind the scenes. We’re all just trying to make sense of things, trying to survive in our own way.
If you’re reading this and you feel like you’re in that dark space, I want to say something to you, You’re not weak. You’re not alone. And you’re definitely not done. Don’t let a bad season convince you that your story ends here.
Sometimes, life doesn’t give us clear answers. But with time, we start to see why certain things happened. Why we had to walk through certain valleys. And believe me, even in the darkest places, there’s something inside you that refuses to quit, and that’s what will carry you forward.
So no matter what you're going through, don’t rush yourself. Heal at your own pace. Breathe. Take breaks. Let go of people who make you feel small. Celebrate how far you’ve come, even if you’re not where you want to be yet.
You’re doing better than you think. Be proud of that.
Thanks for reading.
