We are already in October, the month of Horror and I wanted to talk about one of the animes that deals a lot with horror on many levels and from different origins, all relating it to the human mentality. Having few episodes, it is perfect to watch this month:

The Pet Shop of Horrors anime is a short adaptation of the horror and mystery manga by Matsuri Akino, it is a 4-episode Miniseries (OVA), from the Madhouse studio from the year 1999 of the genres: Horror, Mystery, Fantasy and Supernatural, its Availability to be seen is somewhat complicated depending on the region but here I leave the link to JustWatch to verify it and you cannot see it legally you can always do a One piece cosplay and become pirates.

El anime de Pet Shop of Horrors es una adaptación corta del manga de terror y misterio de Matsuri Akino, es una Miniserie de 4 episodios (OVA), del estudio Madhouse del año 1999 de los generos: Terror, Misterio, Fantasía y Sobrenatural, su Disponibilidad para ser vista es algo complicada dependiendo la región pero aquí dejo el link a JustWatch para verificarla y no la pueden ver legal siempre puede hacer un cosplay de One piece y volverse piratas.

Synopsis | Sinopsis

The story centers on the eccentric Count D, the mysterious owner of a pet shop in the heart of Chinatown (Los Angeles), which sells rare, exotic, and often supernatural animals. Each sale comes with a strict three-clause contract. If the customer follows the rules, everything will be fine, but if they break them, Count D and his shop are not responsible for the tragic consequences. Detective Leon Orcot investigates a series of unexplained deaths, all linked to customers of Count D's shop, trying to find a rational explanation for events that defy all logic.

La historia se centra en el excéntrico Conde D, el misterioso dueño de una tienda de mascotas en el corazón de Chinatown (Los Ángeles), que vende animales raros, exóticos y a menudo sobrenaturales. Cada venta viene con un estricto contrato de tres cláusulas. Si el cliente sigue las reglas, todo irá bien, pero si las rompen, el Conde D y su tienda no se hacen responsables de las trágicas consecuencias. El detective Leon Orcot investiga una serie de muertes inexplicables, todas vinculadas a clientes de la tienda del Conde D, tratando de encontrar una explicación racional a los eventos que desafían toda lógica.

Contractual Terror | Terror Contractual

Pet Shop of Horrors can be framed as Contractual Terror or Rules there are specific instructions to follow and if they are not followed, terrible consequences can be unleashed, which is horror seen from folklore stories, urban legends, novels and films such as: The Ring (1998), It Follows (2014) and A Quiet Place (2018) but the most similar and in my opinion the inspiration for Pet Shop of Horrors was Gremlins (1984) where the narrative is handled very similar but without the touch of comedy, more dramatic because the tragedy is self-inflicted and being a consequence of the inability of the characters to comply with the rules being the basic structure of the story of each episode:

Pet Shop of Horrors se puede enmarcar en el tipo de Terror Contractual o de Reglas hay una indicación especificas a seguir y si no se cumplen se puede desatar consecuencias terribles, lo cual es terror visto desde Historias folclórica, Leyendas urbanas, Novelas y películas como: The Ring (El Aro) (1998), It Follows (Está detrás de ti) (2014) y A Quiet Place (Un lugar tranquilo) (2018) pero la mas parecida y a mi parecer la inspiración para Pet Shop of Horrors fue Gremlins (1984) donde se maneja la narrativa muy parecida pero sin el toque de comedia, más Dramático porque la tragedia es autoinfligida y siendo consecuencia de la incapacidad de los personajes de cumplir la reglas siendo la estructura básica de la historia de cada episodio:

• Human Desire (The Engine): The protagonist (the client) finds themselves in a state of intense despair, greed, or grief. This desire is the sin that drives them to seek magical solutions. Count D does not impose evil; it simply offers a solution to an existing void.

• The Contract (The Moral Warning): An agreement is established, often in writing, with very clear and seemingly simple rules. These clauses represent the moral or ethical boundaries that human desire should not cross.

• The Breach (The Human Fault): The transgression of the rule is almost always voluntary or the result of selfish blindness. The client breaks the contract not by accident, but because their desire, ego, or weakness outweighs their responsibility. It is an act of arrogance.

• The Consequence (The Horror): Horror arises as the logical and inevitable consequence of breaking the pact. The punishment is perfectly aligned with the original desire, acting as an irony of fate. If you sought love through denial, the pet becomes a literal and monstrous manifestation of that denial.

• El Deseo Humano (El Motor): El protagonista (el cliente) se encuentra en un estado de intensa desesperación, codicia o duelo. Este deseo es el pecado que lo lleva a buscar soluciones mágicas. El Conde D no impone el mal; simplemente ofrece una solución a un vacío ya existente.

• El Contrato (La Advertencia Moral): Se establece un acuerdo, a menudo por escrito, con reglas muy claras y aparentemente sencillas. Estas cláusulas representan los límites morales o éticos que el deseo humano no debería cruzar.

• El Incumplimiento (La Falla Humana): La transgresión de la regla es casi siempre voluntaria o resultado de una ceguera egoísta. El cliente rompe el contrato no por accidente, sino porque su deseo, su ego o su debilidad superan su responsabilidad. Es un acto de arrogancia.

• La Consecuencia (El Horror): El horror surge como la consecuencia lógica e inevitable de haber roto el pacto. El castigo está perfectamente alineado con el deseo original, actuando como una ironía del destino. Si buscaste amor a través de la negación, la mascota se convierte en una manifestación literal y monstruosa de esa negación.

The OVAs know very well the type of story they wanted to adapt and how to do it without being repetitive with each story, something that happened and happens with many Horror series and films where between more installments the stories went from Horror to action and then to comedy, in Pet Shop of Horrors each story goes its own way with its own rhythms, elements and narrative tones.

Las Ovas saben muy bien el tipo de historia que querían adaptar y como hacerlo sin ser repetitiva con cada historia algo que pasaba y pasa con muchas series y películas de Terror donde entre se estrenaban mas entregas las historias pasaban del Terror a la acción y después a la comedia, en Pet Shop of Horrors cada historia va por su lado con sus propios ritmos, elementos y tonos narrativos.

<centerOva #1: Daughter>

The first story and the entrance to the story is presented as a more direct horror story with more explicit scenes and an easy to follow plot with a Monster (The Pet) having more disturbing scenes.

La primera historia y la entrada a la historia se presenta como una historia de terror mas directa con mas escenas explicitas y con un argumento fácil de seguir con un Montruo (La Mascota) teniendo escenas más perturbadoras.

Ova #2: Delicious

The second story after presenting the nature of the pets and rules leaves aside direct terror to move on to something more subtle, focusing on the one hand on delving into the motivations of the Count and the detective while on the other it shows us in a more subtle way how the Pets are not evil beings by nature but animals that behave like animals and the clients as people who cannot bear their mistakes, with everything wrapped up in that fantasy where the line is more marked that the beings they see are only a product of the imagination, incense or self-conviction of people.

La segunda historia después se presentar la naturaleza de la mascotas y reglas deja de lado el terror directo para pasar a algo más sutil, centrándose por una parte en profundizar en las motivaciones del Conde y el detective mientras que por otra nos muestra de una manera mas sutil como las Mascota no son seres malignos por naturaleza sino animales que se comportan como animales y los clientes como personas que no pueden cargar con sus errores, con todo envuelto con esa fantasía donde se marca más la línea de que los seres que ven son solo producto de la imaginación, el incienso o el autoconvencimiento de las personas.

Ova #3: Despair

This story takes a twist on what we saw in the previous one and the nature of pets, giving it the factor that they are not normal animals, but rather supernatural beings, while the client's story focuses on depression.

Esta historia da un giro a lo vista en la anterior y la naturaleza de las mascotas dándole ese factor de que no son animales normales, sino que si son seres sobrenaturales mientras la historia del cliente se enfoca en la depresión.

Ova #4: Dual

The last story, which at first doesn't seem like a horror story, until you understand the end of one of the characters due to the whim or dream of another, and giving the conclusion about the beings the Count sells, whether they are supernatural, or at least some of them.

La ultima historia que en un principio no parece de terror hasta que entiendes el final de uno de los personajes por el capricho o sueño de otro y dando como conclusión de los seres que vende el Conde, si son sobrenaturales o por lo menos algunos.

OPINION

An anime that moves between horror and drama very well that can put people off watching it because it is more than 20 years old and its quality and animation have aged poorly and that deserves to have a Remake or a complete adaptation of the original manga taking into account that the manga has had several more installments until recent years and remember the worst horror that exists are:

Un anime que se mueve entre el terror y el drama muy bien que puede alejar a las personas para verlo al tener mas de 20 años y su calidad y animación haber envejecido regular y que merece tener un Remake o una adaptación completa del manga original teniendo en cuenta que el manga a tenido varias entregas más hasta los últimos años y recuerden el peor horror que existe son:
