We Were Here Together

We Were Here Together is a purely first-person cooperative puzzle and adventure video game, developed and published by the Dutch independent studio Total Mayhem Games. Originally released in 2019, it is the third installment in the acclaimed We Were Here series. The game places two players in the role of Antarctic explorers who must rescue their team trapped in the sinister Castle Rockbury. Its main mechanic lies in asymmetric communication: players are physically separated and must use a walkie-talkie to describe clues to each other and solve complex riddles that require perfect coordination.

El juego sitúa a dos jugadores en el papel de exploradores antárticos que deben rescatar a su equipo atrapado en el siniestro Castillo Rockbury. Su mecánica principal reside en la comunicación asimétrica: los jugadores están físicamente separados y deben utilizar un walkie-talkie para describirse mutuamente pistas y resolver acertijos complejos que requieren una coordinación perfecta.

To be honest, this is one of those titles I’ve always seen in sales, and it has generated a lot of curiosity in me. I’ve seen snippets of gameplay, and the atmosphere of solitude in Antarctica caught my attention; however, I hadn't researched it and thought it was a kind of survival game with a cooperative possibility. It was through these Mystery Games that I discovered it was a game based on cooperation and total dependence on another person. Although it’s a fascinating idea, I’m not such a big fan of these types of games that require coordination with a partner or friend because we usually prefer more casual titles due to having different schedules in our daily lives. But now that Epic Games is giving it away, there’s no excuse not to try it with a friend.

Siendo sincero, este es uno de esos títulos que siempre he visto en las rebajas y me ha generado muchísima curiosidad. He visto fragmentos de gameplay y la atmósfera de soledad en la Antártida me llamaba la atención para querer jugarlo, pero no había investigado y pensaba que era una especie de juego de supervivencia con posibilidad de ser cooperativo. Fue por estos Mystery Games que descubrí que era un juego fundamentado en la cooperación y la dependencia total con otra persona. Aunque es una idea fascinante, no soy tan fanático de este tipo de juegos que necesitan la coordinación con algún compañero o amigo porque somos más de usar cosas más casuales al tener diferentes horarios en el día a día. Pero ahora que Epic Games lo regala, ya no hay excusa para probarlo con un amigo.

Investigating, I saw that what makes We Were Here Together special is that it’s not the typical game where everyone can go their own way. It is a purely cooperative puzzle game where communication is the central axis. You are separated from your partner, and the only way to advance is by describing what you see through a walkie-talkie.

I’ve heard that this game can strengthen friendships or, in the worst-case scenario, cause epic arguments if you don’t know how to explain yourself well. It is, in essence, a challenge of logic and patience that forces you to blindly trust the other person.

This is great because it allows any pair of players to try the basic dynamics of the saga without spending a single cent, and then jump into this much more polished version, with better graphics and more complex puzzles that they are giving us today.

OPINION

Although I haven't yet felt the pressure of being trapped in an Antarctic base trying to explain a complex control panel, the excitement to give it a chance is huge. It’s a game that requires commitment and good communication but promises incredible satisfaction when solving each riddle. If you have someone to play with and you like mental challenges, run to claim it before it disappears tomorrow. For my part, I will take advantage of my days off to test them with friends or my cousins. I understand that for players who prefer single-player games or who only play for entertainment, today's game might feel like they were given nothing, but it’s there to have in your library and play at another time.

Aunque todavía no he sentido la presión de estar atrapado en una base antártica tratando de explicar un panel de control complejo, la emoción por darle una oportunidad es enorme. Es un juego que requiere compromiso y buena comunicación, pero que promete una satisfacción increíble al resolver cada acertijo. Si tienes a alguien con quien jugar y te gustan los retos mentales, corre a reclamarlo antes de que desaparezca mañana. Por mi parte, aprovecharé los días libres para probarlo con amigos o mis primos. Aunque entiendo que para los jugadores que prefieren los juegos single player o que solo juegan para entretenerse, el juego de este día es como si no hubieran dado nada, pero allí está para tenerlo en su biblioteca y jugarlo en otro momento.
