A Wednesday walk through Venice

The Julian New Year is a holiday celebrated on January 13-14 of the Gregorian calendar each year. That date is January 1 of the Julian calendar.Although the name Serbian New Year is established in Serbia, in different parts of Europe it is known as Julian, Old or Orthodox New Year.My wife wanted to celebrate by going to Venice with her friends. Of course, it's known that women decide everything, so we left on the 12th and are returning home on the 15th. Today is Wednesday and a day to walk around Venice. We left the hotel and set off without a plan, because in this city you don't choose a direction in advance. The streets are narrow and often end with a canal or a bridge. We walked more slowly, following the path that signs and passages between buildings led me. The water could be heard behind the walls, and footsteps echoed on the stone.

We crossed the bridges that connect parts of the city. Gondolas and transport boats passed under them. People were standing on the bridges, taking photos or just looking at the water. We also stopped, leaning on the fence, following the movement of the boats and the rhythm of the canal.

We walked to St. Mark's Square. The square was full of people. Some were walking, some were sitting, and some were feeding pigeons. I stopped and looked at the basilica building and the tower. We continued our walk along the Great Canal. Public transport boats docked and departed. People were coming in and out. We walked along the shore, following the course of the canal, until the streets narrowed again and took me into the inner city.
We passed through several smaller squares.

The walk brought us to the Rialto Bridge. I stood among the people and looked at the Grand Canal below me. Boats were passing in both directions. The shops around the bridge were open and people were going in and out.

As the day wore on, the streets were quieter. Lights were on in shop windows and apartments. We walked aimlessly, passing through known and unknown streets.
The walk through Venice ended with a return to the hotel.I felt that this city does not ask to be fully understood, but to be passed through, step by step, without haste.

Venice is such a a beautiful place, surprising to see that almost all the streets ended up in canals.

Some bridges were built above and across some canals.

Very lovely to see.
Thank you for letting me see the Venice I read about in my secondary school from my literature book, known as

"The Marchant of Venice"
more than 20 years ago.
