A city within a city - Alba Iulia - Romania

After visiting the salt mines, I headed towards Alba Iulia, the city where my daughter and friends from all over the world had gathered for a joint project. Now it was clear to me why there is no bus service here. I turned off the highway and drove some 11km to the city.Alba Iulia is divided into the Upper and Lower Towns. I decided to focus my tour on the Upper Town, which is located in the fortress. This was a real surprise for me and I have never seen anything like this. In our Belgrade there is a huge fortress, but inside it there are only historical sights and parks, here the entire city is located in the 12km long fortress Alba Karolina. The fortress has 6 entrances and it is very important to enter at the right entrance then you will find your way around very easily. Entrance is free and I immediately bought a map at the entrance. My entrance is the beginning of the Coronation Cathedral. Kings were crowned here.

What I read in the map, I will write what is there of the sights. First, the fortress was built in the shape of a star, and the landmarks I saw were the coronation cathedral of the Romanian royal couple, the Roman Catholic cathedral with the tomb of Janos Hunjadi, and the National Unification Museum.

The fortress functions as an urban district of the city, which particularly fascinated me. There are several streets with houses from the 18th and 19th centuries that are still used as private homes or have been converted into some catering facility that is particularly interesting for tourists. I would love to stay in one of these houses. Maybe there are ghosts haha. In addition to the house, inside the fortress there are also important buildings such as a university, a military hospital and the headquarters of the Romanian army. While I was walking around the fortress, I only saw locals going to work or school, shopping. It's really easy to live here, and I couldn't believe it. You know, I would love to live here too. I saw several parks, a fountain, cafes, restaurants. And all that in a 4-hour tour. Of course, that's only part of it, because it would take me at least 4 days to tour this city.

There in a park I waited for my child and it was already dark. I managed to take a few more photos and we set off for Timisoara where we would spend the night.
