What I Started Noticing When I Learned to Appreciate Small Things

I didn’t always pay attention to appreciation. To me, it was just something you say, like “thank you” and move on. Nothing deep. Life was more about chasing the next thing, the next goal, the next improvement. I didn’t really stop to look at what I already had.

But something changed, slowly.

There was a time when things were not goingin the the way I wanted it to be. Trying but efforts is not giving the results, plans are not working, and I started feeling frustrated. It felt like nothing was enough. That was when my mother said something simple, “You are looking at what is missing, not what is present.”

At first, I didn’t take it serious. It sounded like one of those normal advice. But later, I sat down and really thought about it. I realized I had been ignoring a lot of small good things around me.

So I tried something small. Just noticing things more. Not big achievements, just little things. Waking up okay, having food, having people around me, even small progress in what I’m doing. It felt strange at first, like I was forcing it.

But over time, something shifted.

Then I started feeling a bit more calm. Not like all problems disappeared, no. But the weight felt lighter. Appreciation didn’t solve everything, but it changed how I was seeing things.

My father used to say, “If you don’t value what you have, even more won’t satisfy you.” That made more sense to me now. Because I noticed that when I appreciate small things, I don’t feel as empty or rushed.

Another thing I noticed is how it affects people around you. When you show genuine appreciation, not fake, people feel it. A simple “I appreciate this” can change someone’s mood. It builds connection in a quiet way.

Of course, I still forget sometimes. I still complain, still focus on what is not working. I’m not perfect at it. But now I catch myself faster.

The reward of being appreciative is not something loud. It’s not money or something you can touch. It’s more of a feeling. Peace, contentment, and a better way of seeing life.

And honestly, that kind of reward is something I didn’t expect… but I think it matters a lot.
