“New Year, New Wishes, and the Korean Way of Blessing People"

New Year is always something that feels more than just calendar changing. Even in my own house growing up, my parents always talk on 31st night and say things like “may God guide us, may we be better than last year,” and sometimes I didn’t understand it that time because I was younger and only thinking of fireworks or food. But as I grow small by small, I understand that words have power and blessings can actually give strength inside someone’s heart.

When I learn about Korea New Year culture, especially about this thing they call “New Year’s Deokdam,” it really touched me in simple way. In Korea, they don’t just say happy new year and disappear. They say wishes from inside that show respect and heart like “wish you good health this year,” “may your family have peace,” “may things be easy for you.” When I hear this, it reminds me of how in Nigeria or India elders will say “God bless you,” “may success follow you,” after you greet them. It might sound small but inside it is a prayer and guidance.

My mother always use to tell me that beginning of a year is like planting season. If you plant good words, good mindset, good behavior, later you can harvest good things. She will say “don’t start year with bad mouth or negative heart,” and sometime I laugh but later I see the truth. In India also many people believe new year is time to renew relationships and settle small fights, and offer sweets and blessings. In Korea, they bow to elders and say these respectful Deokdam words. There is something pure and humble about that.

What I also learned is that blessing someone doesn’t reduce anything from you. It actually add to your spirit. When we say to someone “I hope your year go well,” it makes connection, even if we are not family. And I think this is important in 2026 because world is more harsh now, people are rushing, people are comparing, people are lonely silently. A simple wish for health and peace is like comfort.

So my own Deokdam this year, in my own simple way, I will say: may this year bring strength to your body, peace to your mind, and food to your table. May your parents sleep with relief and may you find something worth waking up for every morning. If you fall, may you rise. And if you are already rising, may you continue without pride.

That is my own new year blessing.
