Finding Balance While Living Through Financial Disruption

There was a time in my life when money issues sat on my chest like a heavy stone. Bills waiting, plans paused, sleep broken in the middle of the night. I did not understand it then, but this was what financial disruption really means. Not total poverty, not total comfort, just that uncomfortable middle where income is shaky and needs are many. In those days, I remembered my parents more than ever, especially their words, even the ones I ignored when life was soft.

My father used to say, “Money is a tool, not your master.” At that time, it sounded like old talk. But when money became short, I saw how true it was. Panic can make you lose balance. You start chasing quick fixes, borrowing without thinking, spending small money carelessly because you feel everything is already broken. That is where balance is lost. My mother always taught us to sit down and count, even if the money is small. She would say, “If you respect little money, it will respect you back.” I laughed then. I don’t laugh now.

Living through financial disruption taught me to slow down. I learned to separate what is urgent from what is important. Food, shelter, peace of mind—these come first. Fancy things can wait. Parents don’t always teach with big grammar or long lectures. Sometimes it is just the way they reuse things, the way they avoid waste, the way they stay calm even when they are worried. I noticed my mother never complained loudly about money in front of us. She protected our minds. That itself is a lesson.

Balance does not mean everything is okay. It means you are standing even when the ground is shaking. I learned to plan small, not big. Save little, not dream too far ahead. I learned to ask for help without shame and to give help when I can, even if it is just advice or time. Financial disruption humbles you. It removes pride but gives wisdom if you allow it.

Today, I am still learning. Some days I fail. I overspend, I worry too much, I feel tired. But I hear my parents’ voices guiding me softly, reminding me to breathe and think. Money comes and goes, but values stay. Balance, I have learned, is not having enough money. It is having enough sense, patience, and character to walk through hard seasons without losing yourself.
