Color and Culture: My Take on the Lantern Festival in Korea

Any time I read about Korean way of living I always find something that arrest my interest. Here is another exciting Korean festival.

One of the most colorful and popular festivals in Korea that caught my attention is the Lotus Lantern Festival (Yeon Deung Hoe), held in Seoul and other big cities. I have not only read about it but also watched videos that made me feel like I was right there. The festival is a way of celebrating Buddha’s birthday, but it has become more than just a religious event. It is now one of the biggest cultural celebrations in Korea that brings together locals and visitors from all over the world.

What I find most interesting about this festival is the lantern parade. Imagine walking through the busy streets of Seoul at night and suddenly seeing thousands of beautiful lanterns shaped like lotus flowers, dragons, animals, and even cultural symbols floating above the crowd. The light from the lanterns makes the whole city glow, and you can feel the joy in the air. Every place is exciting with shinings.

Another activity that makes the festival special is the lantern-making experience. People sit down together to make their own lanterns, and it doesn’t matter if you are young or old. It feels like a chance to share creativity and happiness with strangers who suddenly feel like friends, everyone close to each other through lantern made.

There are also traditional performances like drumming, dancing, and street parades with people in hanbok (Korean traditional clothes). For me, this part shows how culture and history are not forgotten, and can not be forgotten cos it life and fun to everyone.

The festival also gives a taste of Korean food stalls, where you can enjoy local dishes while watching the celebrations. It’s like culture, history, and good food all mixed together in one big party.

What I admire most about the Lantern Festival is how it brings people together. In today’s world where everyone seems busy, moments like this remind us that community, light, and joy are still important.

I hope to visit Korea one day, and I hope it be during the Lotus Lantern Festival would be one of the first things on my list. It is not just a festival; it is a beautiful expression of culture, unity, and hope.
