She Couldn’t Call for Help, So She Used the “Signal for Help” Gesture in Southern Italy and Was Saved: This Is Why Everyone Should Know It

Today I would like to present the story, fortunately with a good ending, of a woman who was in real danger due to the violence of her partner and was saved only thanks to the Signal for Help, the international signal used by victims of domestic violence to ask for help without speaking. The main reason I am sharing her story is to raise awareness of this signal and encourage people to spread knowledge about it, because I only get to know about it a few months ago, it is not very well explained to all the people.

It all started yesterday (27 May 2026), along a road in southern Italy, when the woman was in a car with her partner after a day at the beach when an argument quickly escalated into an assault with the man hitting her in the face and taking her phone while she was trying to call 112.

Later they stopped at a service area and it is there that the woman made the hand gesture, thumb tucked into the palm and the other fingers folded over it, hoping someone would notice it and call for help without drawing the attention of her partner.

Some motorists recognized the gesture and understood what was happening, they did not ignore the situation. They called emergency services (112) and, very importantly, began to follow the car at a distance while staying in contact with 112. The man then turned onto a secluded road and the situation worsened when he grabbed the woman by the neck. At that point she managed to break free by pretending to feel unwell and got into the car of those who were following them, saving herself. When the Carabinieri arrived, the man was arrested.

This case shows how decisive it can be to know this signal from both the victim and other people: it is not a dramatic or obvious gesture, but precisely for that reason it can work when speaking is not possible and at the same time, it is equally important to know how to recognize it.
