KFC scandal in Denmark, Czech Republic, and Italy: moldy chicken, false dates, cruel farms

Most of us more or less know that fast food sells garbage to eat, no one expects quality food. But what has been discovered at KFC is truly disgusting, and all in the name of profit. In Denmark, all 11 KFC restaurants inspected by the veterinary authorities failed the hygiene controls and were closed: dirty refrigerators, meat stored at incorrect temperatures, moldy meat, and it doesn’t end there because expired chicken was relabeled and then cooked and sold to customers. Three months later, in the Czech Republic, over a third of the inspected restaurants presented the same violations: spoiled meat, falsified dates, foul-smelling chicken served to customers.

On the other hand, even the meat at the source is not 'decent': in the Italian farms that supply the chain, thousands of chickens are crammed into overcrowded barns, of breeds genetically selected to grow too fast and that often cannot even stand on their own, but as if that were not enough, ammonia is put in the litter causing burns and continuous pain to the animals; and of course, the usual antibiotics are not missing. All of this is to contain losses and maximize profits, all to make the meat ready to eat in fast food restaurants.

KFC, like all fast food in general, is one of the symbols of consumerism: in this case it has trained people to turn a blind eye: everything immediately, without spending much time, cheap and convenient, without asking what is behind it, just take and eat, eat again. All these shameful practices, these abuses on animals and health risks are ignored for convenience because if KFC reopened in Denmark tomorrow, there would be lines to eat there again. But ignoring things changes nothing: it funds a system that puts profit above safety and respect.

The responsibility lies with everyone, not just companies: stop ordering while pretending not to know, it is time to choose alternatives that respect animals, quality and transparency, stop continuing to close our eyes. Every meal is a choice, every choice is a message to companies: choosing consciously is the only way not to become complicit in the fast food that hides what we do not want to see.
