Saludos comunidad @holos.lotus
Greetings, community. @holos.lotus
Lately, in my comings and goings through physical and virtual spaces, I quite frequently come across the word "incompetent"—something that, given the times we're going through here, is no coincidence. The circumstances in which people live and in which the State operates are reflected in our organizations, our work teams, and our daily lives, which makes this term resonate so strongly.
Today, I believe there is no space in society that escapes the scourge of incompetence, and we end up living with it, like an old sofa we've grown accustomed to. As old as the idea that has been circulating for decades and somewhat explains this phenomenon: "people tend to rise until they reach a position they don't know how to fill, and there they stay," as if the elevator only had an up button, and the down button had broken. When incompetence becomes evident, logic would dictate that the person step back and find a place where they could truly contribute. Contrary to that, for some reason mixing internal politics, fears, and poor decisions, the incompetent person settles in and, against all laws of gravity, does not fall.
Incompetence is not the exclusive domain of bosses; the problem isn't always at the top. Reality is more complex. It won't be hard to find inept parents in raising their children, inept professionals in their trade, even people in operational roles who are clearly not qualified for what they do. No, incompetence is quite democratic; it doesn't distinguish hierarchies, and perhaps that is where we could look at our own areas of incompetence.
What is certain is that there are incompetent people who end up leading a team, making decisions that affect others, and setting the course for important projects. And once there, they stay, because the incompetent person does not recognize themselves as such. They don't, because deep down, we all have an ego that whispers to us that we can, that with effort and willpower, anything is achievable. Now, willpower is important, but it's not everything. Accepting that we lack the tools for a specific task is not a defeat; it's an act of responsibility. On the contrary, many prefer to ignore their limits and say yes to everything, even when they know they are treading on swampy ground, and by not lowering their heads in time, they end up sinking into a position that overwhelms them.
It also happens that someone, at some point, made the decision to put that person there. Selecting someone for a role they cannot perform is, in itself, an act of incompetence. Behind an incompetent person in a position, there is usually another incompetent person who chose them, or someone who, out of comfort, lack of judgment, or shady interests, preferred not to make a good selection. It's a self-perpetuating chain that ends up generating a system where the norm is that those making decisions are not up to the task. Many times, the incompetent person remains because others see their incompetence and prefer to stay silent, complain under their breath, but not confront the situation. That silence and passivity gives permission for them to stay; complicity with incompetence is also a form of incompetence.
Incompetence, when it holds power, not only affects productivity or the achievement of goals, but it also generates toxic work environments, erodes trust, demotivates those who are truly competent, and I think the worst part is that it can even be sickening—living with an incompetent person who decides for us, imposes absurd guidelines on us, and makes us waste time and energy.
The good news is that incompetence is not forever. We are all incompetent at something, but that has a solution: training, study, practice, and experience can turn an incompetent person into a competent one. The problem is not being incompetent; the problem is staying there, settling into incompetence and doing nothing to escape it. The key lies in being aware of our limitations, while at the same time taking on the challenge of overcoming them. Because there is an inescapable individual responsibility: if we are offered a position or responsibility for which we are not prepared, the honest thing is to say "no" or "not yet"—not out of false modesty, but out of respect for ourselves and for those who will depend on our work. And if we are already in a place where our incompetence becomes evident, the path is not to cling to the position, but to find a way to grow, to learn, to prepare ourselves, and if that's not possible, to have the greatness to step aside.
There is also a collective responsibility. We cannot continue to be complicit in others' incompetence. Pointing it out and confronting it with respect but with firmness is an act of mental health and integrity. It's not about "kicking someone when they're down," but about demanding that things be done right, that those who hold positions of responsibility live up to what is expected of them, so that the bad decisions of a few do not determine the lives of many.
