Greetings, friends.

The book that changed my life as a writer was One Hundred Years of Solitude. I write much more poetry than prose, and yet, this great novel was the first one I thought of, the one that, without a doubt, marked a turning point.

Before reading García Márquez, I suffered from an inferiority complex typical of Caribbean authors. I believed, although I didn't admit it aloud, that to write serious literature I had to imitate the landscapes, names, and conflicts of European or North American novels.

I thought my reality, full of heat, broken fans, May downpours, and neighborhood gossip, wasn't sophisticated enough to be told. That novel shook me to my core. It showed me that there are no limits to the how or the what.

Gabo took the same raw material I saw every day in any Cuban provincial town—the aunt who makes sweets, the veteran of pointless wars, the dead that people refuse to fully bury—and built a literary universe that the whole world was forced to respect. He didn't need to disguise his roots with London snow or foreign customs.

Therein lay the key: our culture, the way we speak and remember, was already good literature; we just needed the courage to write it unapologetically. I stopped looking for borrowed themes. I began to listen attentively to how passengers argue on a Havana camel bus. There, in that specific chaos, was my work. That book freed me from imitation.

Saludos, amigas.

El libro que me cambió la vida como escritora fue Cien años de soledad. Escribo mucha más poesía que narrativa y, sin embargo, fue esta gran novela la primera que pensé, la que, sin lugar a dudas, marcó un antes y un después.

Antes de leer a García Márquez, yo arrastraba un complejo de inferioridad típico del autor caribeño. Creía, aunque no lo confesara en voz alta, que para escribir literatura seria debía imitar los paisajes, los nombres y los conflictos de las novelas europeas o norteamericanas.

Pensaba que mi realidad, llena de calor, ventiladores rotos, aguaceros de mayo y chismes de vecindad, no tenía la altura suficiente para ser contada. Esa novela me sacudió la cabeza de un golpe. Me demostró que no existen límites para el cómo ni para el qué.

Gabo tomó la misma materia prima que yo veía todos los días en cualquier pueblo de provincia cubano —la tía que fabrica dulces, el veterano de guerras inútiles, los muertos que la gente se niega a enterrar del todo— y construyó un universo literario que el mundo entero se vio obligado a respetar. No necesitó disfrazar sus raíces con nieve londinense ni con costumbres ajenas.

Ahí estaba la clave: la cultura nuestra, la forma en que hablamos y recordamos, ya era buena literatura; solo había que tener el coraje de escribirla sin pedir disculpas. Dejé de buscar temas prestados. Empecé a escuchar con atención cómo discuten los pasajeros en un camello habanero. Ahí, en ese caos específico, estaba mi trabajo. Ese libro me liberó de la imitación.
