Lately it has been over 100 degrees F in Texas and very very dry for both plants and animals so I have been putting out small bowls of water on the front and back porch for the birds.
Each day I had been watching the small birds drink from the bowls. However one morning I got up and noticed two larger birds on the back porch - Road Runners.
One Road Runner was perched on the railing on the back porch not far away from the bowl of water. I stood at the door staring at it for the longest time as it did not notice me. Then it jumped down on the deck by the pool and ran to the right. When I looked in that direction, I noticed another one roosting on the rail at the corner of the spa / hot tub.
This one was a much fatter one so I figured it was the female and that the pair of them were creating a next close by.
Now that I have placed the small bowls of water out, I now see the Road Runners on a daily basis in both the front and back yards.
One day when I had watched one in the front yard I was walking around the house, I noticed another one out a different window. This one was a slightly darker one similar to the small one from the above pictures so I believe there may be another pair of Road Runners that are visiting the house to get drinks of water.
I like helping out the wildlife stay hydrated during these very dry times. They also provide me a lot of entertainment so it is the least I can do.
