Goal Setting in Turbulent Times

Sometimes I wonder how meaningful it even is to set goals during turbulent and very unpredictable times.

To be honest, it feels a bit futile when you live in a world where you can wake up tomorrow and the wind will have changed in such a direction that the effort you put in to setting goals yesterday has become meaningless.

It reminds me a bit of asking an elderly friend a while back what they were planning to do the following week and the response was "to be upright and breathing on my own."

I suppose we have to consider the purpose of goals, in this discussion. I mean, we can use goals as inspirational tools, but without attaching to the stated outcome. The goal is merely something to work towards without it having a tangible impact on our reality.

However, things become a lot more sketchy if the goal in directly tied to some part of our lives, like being able to pay the rent. paying a rent is a pretty fixed objective, and we're trying to accomplish a goal in an environment that is enormously unstable.

With the exception of a small number of people who seem like they may be financially secure, most of us feel like our path forward is largely at the mercy of external factors, and that is very difficult to live with.

Having always been very much of a planner in life, I sometimes find this type of environment frustrating to the point of being almost unbearable. And yet? We have to find some kind of path forward that makes sense to us and enables us to get from point A to point B.

From a personal perspective, perhaps the thing I find most relevant in this day and age is that I am increasingly swapping out long-term goals for short-term goals.

I feel a lot better about setting goals that I can reach within the next week or next month or the next 3 months or even by the end of the year, than looking at where I might be in 5 years from now. While it would be really nice to have some long-term plans in place, the future these days feel so uncertain that's setting goals feels more like pure guesswork than a structured exercise.

Part of me feels rather sad that the world has actually gotten to this place, and I try to remind myself that all epochs of human experience have had their periods of great uncertainty.

I also know that my perception may be somewhat skewed by the fact that I have been substantially involved in the Cryptosphere for over a decade. However, many other aspects of life have also become highly unpredictable... and it's challenging for those of us who thrive the most during periods of stability.

For now, I'm sticking with making goals that mainly focus on the next three months or so, quarter-by-quarter.
