My mother-in-law was seated and waiting for me when I initially arrived at my husband's house. I looked lost as I entered the house. She grinned and said, "Come in, let me wash your feet." Was this a custom? Was this an initiation of any sort? I was completely startled that this was happening, even though I had only had two in-person interactions with his mother because I lived overseas. I married a Christian.

My husband stayed silent and composed, almost like a fool, for want of better words. He appeared to have gone insane. He dipped his leg into the basin after following. I didn't. I pretended to have a stomach ache and entered the loo. I called my mother right then. What kind of absurdity is this? Does she wish to replace you in her son's life? My mother yelled in a terrified tone, "This woman must be demonic. She wants to steal your glory, so don't put your legs inside!"

My mother-in-law was waiting at the door with a bathing bag, a robe, and a towel when I emerged. "My wife, you should get dressed. Have a bath. I was afraid at this moment. She informed me that my spouse was on the phone when I asked to talk to him. Anger raged in my stomach now. "With all due respect, ma, please let me talk to my husband." She apologised right away. "Oh, I apologise; I'm not stopping you from talking to him in any way, am I?” I didn't even respond.

I entered the room and started talking loudly and angrily at him. He didn't react and maintained his composure. It made me appear stupid, and as I was still yelling, I heard loud voices and the main entrance open. "Where is our spouse? I couldn't figure out where our wife was. My in-laws were waiting for me at the door, singing and dancing as I hurried out. One of my husband's sisters remarked, "This is how we welcome our wife."

Additionally, there was a saxophonist at the door. When my mother-in-law started singing, my sisters-in-law joined in and sprayed me with cash. I was completely stunned. My defences had vanished. I was immobilised. My spouse gave me a hug and started apologising. He murmured in my ear, "I wasn't allowed to spoil the surprise." I struck him in jest. My mother-in-law said, "I'm sorry, my daughter."

It wasn't until thirty minutes later that I went into the kitchen and discovered four different kinds of treats. My phone started ringing. I hurried to retrieve it. "I've told that insane woman to keep out of my daughter's wedding. My mother yelled over the phone, "She can't try that nonsense while I'm still alive." "Mom, please, don't! Oh, please, mum! "What is it?" "Mommy, I was mistaken." I took my time to explain to my mother, but the crime had already been committed—worse still, via SMS since my mother-in-law couldn't answer the phone.

My mother-in-law is still the loveliest person I've ever met, no matter what occurred. My in-laws gave me a car at the naming of our twin boys. God reminded me once more that the aura I deserved to give and receive was peace and love, even if I was raised to exchange aura for aura.
