[ENG-ESP] A REVIEW OF 'WANDERLUST' BY DANIELLE STEEL

This book got me asking myself this serious question:

ARE HAPPY ENDINGS REALISTIC?

We often crave happy endings when we read fiction, but somehow, I didn't exactly want it in this particular book. In fact, I didn't expect it to gravitate towards anything love and romance until it did. I remember being pissed when that happened. It made me a bit uninterested in the book, and that slowed me down in completing it. I did anyways, and I did enjoy the story at the end of the day.

Genuinely, I thought the book was going to be all about photography and travelling (exploring the world). In fact, that was what attracted me to the book in the first place. I even bought it because that is literally my life goal — to travel the world and capture its pieces through photography. The fact that the main character was a female photographer too was the real catch for me. So, I thought I was going to live part of my dream through the book until they introduced a man and made it all about love and travel instead. Well, I had to take what I got because I had no choice.

The book is an interesting one though. It tells a story about an unmarried lady that was subjected (by circumstances) to taking care of her old grandfather and younger sister, running the entire household. She was doing all these and almost didn't have a life of her own. Her younger sister, Annabelle, depended on her way too much that she became spoilt and couldn't do basic things by herself. The elder sister and main character, Audrey, kept showing up in all ways possible till she couldn't anymore. In fact, people had already started talking and calling her names, especially when her younger sister got married.

She had a lifelong dream to travel the world like their parents did. As much as her grandfather loved her, he was very skeptical about allowing her to embark on that journey, because that was how he lost his son and daughter-in-law (Audrey and Anna's parents). Eventually, he gave in and allowed her to travel. Audrey embarked on her wandering, but she eventually went farther than she had ever imagined. She met different people along the way — including Charles, her own special person, who also loved travelling and happened to be a writer.

Their story was another interesting part of the book — a bittersweet one. They were together, then apart, then together again — facing a series of challenges that, honestly, felt a bit too easily resolved. I didn't expect them to have that happy ending, because in real life, what they both went through together would have most likely broken them. Anyways, I am glad it had a happy ending though. If nobody deserved it, Audrey really did — she deserved her happy ending.

I'm glad I didn't give up on the book and actually finished it. I picked up a new book, and it's non-fiction this time around. It's about marketing. I don't think I entirely enjoy reading self-help or business books, but there is usually a lot to learn in them. I do hope This is Marketing by Seth Godin is as good as it appears. I just got to chapter 2. I plan on finishing it in a week so I can pick up The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari before I finally unwind with a fiction before the month runs out.

¿LOS FINALES FELICES SON REALISTAS?

A menudo anhelamos finales felices cuando leemos ficción, pero de alguna manera, no lo deseaba exactamente en este libro en particular. De hecho, no esperaba que se inclinara hacia el amor y el romance… hasta que lo hizo. Recuerdo que me molestó cuando eso pasó. Me hizo perder un poco el interés en el libro, y eso ralentizó mi avance para terminarlo. Aun así lo terminé, y disfruté la historia al final del día.

Sinceramente, pensé que el libro iba a tratar completamente sobre fotografía y viajes (explorar el mundo). De hecho, eso fue lo que me atrajo del libro desde el principio. Incluso lo compré porque ese es literalmente mi objetivo en la vida: viajar por el mundo y capturar sus pedazos a través de la fotografía. El hecho de que la protagonista también fuera una fotógrafa fue lo que realmente me enganchó. Así que pensé que iba a vivir parte de mi sueño a través del libro, hasta que introdujeron a un hombre y lo convirtieron todo en una historia de amor y viajes. Bueno, tuve que conformarme con lo que había porque no tenía elección.

El libro, sin embargo, es interesante. Cuenta la historia de una mujer soltera que, por circunstancias, tuvo que hacerse cargo de su abuelo anciano y su hermana menor, llevando todo el hogar sobre sus hombros. Hacía todo esto y casi no tenía una vida propia. Su hermana menor, Annabelle, dependía demasiado de ella, hasta el punto de volverse consentida y no saber hacer cosas básicas por sí misma. La hermana mayor y protagonista, Audrey, seguía cumpliendo en todos los sentidos posibles… hasta que ya no pudo más. De hecho, la gente ya había empezado a hablar y a llamarla con nombres ofensivos, especialmente cuando su hermana menor se casó.

Tenía un sueño de toda la vida: viajar por el mundo, como lo hicieron sus padres. Aunque su abuelo la amaba mucho, era muy escéptico con respecto a dejarla emprender ese viaje, porque así fue como perdió a su hijo y a su nuera (los padres de Audrey y Anna). Finalmente, cedió y le permitió viajar. Audrey emprendió su camino, pero terminó yendo más lejos de lo que jamás había imaginado. Conoció a muchas personas en el camino —incluido Charles, su persona especial— quien también amaba viajar y además era escritor.

Su historia fue otra parte interesante del libro —una historia agridulce. Estuvieron juntos, luego separados, luego juntos otra vez — enfrentando una serie de desafíos que, honestamente, parecían resolverse con demasiada facilidad. No esperaba que tuvieran ese final feliz, porque en la vida real, todo lo que ambos vivieron juntos probablemente los habría roto. Aun así, me alegra que haya tenido un final feliz. Si alguien lo merecía, definitivamente era Audrey — ella merecía su final feliz.

Me alegra no haberme rendido con el libro y haberlo terminado. Empecé un nuevo libro, y esta vez es de no ficción. Trata sobre marketing. No creo que disfrute del todo leer libros de autoayuda o de negocios, pero generalmente hay mucho que aprender en ellos. Espero que This is Marketing de Seth Godin sea tan bueno como parece. Apenas voy por el capítulo 2. Planeo terminarlo en una semana para poder empezar El monje que vendió su Ferrari antes de finalmente relajarme con una novela de ficción antes de que termine el mes.
