I was very pleased with the betting action on Friday in particular because I felt I made all the right choices. Often there is an idea on what you think might happen and where something is offering value with different options. Often I just spread my bets between them but yesterday I specifically choose for the Team Total Over in corners for Mechelen staying away from the Mechelen corners handicap in-game and I also stayed away from backing the late over or going against a big move on Mechelen as they had a total off day showing once again how tricky and dumb it is to oppose line moves. That worked out well as Mechelen went from zero to 4 corners late in the match easily covering the handicap while a couple late corners for Stadard, no late goal and the away team winning would have lost all the other bets. So a very solid +0.36 units of Profit on Friday building some confidence into the rest of the weekend whicg already starts in 2 hours while I still have to start looking deeper into the 3 Saturday matches, so here it goes...
FC Dender vs Westerlo
Dender has been a team who have put up better performances than their rank and results indicated but at the same time it's not that they are actually any good. Last week they finally took their 1st win away against Antwerp who are currently also a bottom team and who had many missings. Their main trend has been that they vastly increased their xg where at the start of the season in the first 9 games they averaged just 0.65xg created while in the last 6 match it has increased to 1.65 which is a massive difference. In terms of xg against they were at 1.49 and now are at 1.33. At home, they also have a high 2H ratio at 83%+. They are still in range to not end last but at the same time, I don't really see a team who are likely to end below them and I also don't think the win now all of a sudden will lift them up that much. Westerlo in the past weeks have been a team who deserved more but seem to have an efficiency problem with just 1 goal scored in the last 5 league matches despite the 7.06xg. At the same time in those matches they got 7.17xg againt which resulted in 4 goals against. They also have a much higher average goals in their away matches at 4.14 and 64% of those coming in the 2nd half while they are break even against the Asian total lines there. Their bad streak of 3 Draws and 3 Losses (including 1 in the cup against a 2nd division team) kind of started when one of their better players Rommons got injured and he is still out. Based on Quality, I can see Westerlo as the favorite winning but form remains a key factor and that isn't really woring in their favor while Dender has broken their streak with a first win last week. I can see a match where both teams are kind of willing to go forward especially later in the match but where efficiency might be a factor. I do think the odds on the 1H under are too high and took 0.25 units on
1H Under 1 @ 2.500 fully with the intention to put it safe in-game if possible. I also kind of like the Dender corners handicap where they are the underdog while they won the last 3 home games. I do prefer to back it when they are behind though so I'm waiting for now and will see how it goes. If the odds on Westerlo get to 1.80+ for he DNB line I might also give that a try.
Zulte-Waregem vs Cercle Brugge
Zulte-Waregem is currently 8th in the league in a position where they can play quite freely despite the fact that they failed to win in their last 4 matches that include 3 draws in which they reached a mediocre level. The main thing that stands out is their average xg against in their last 4 matches which is at 2.71 while over the entire season with an average of 1.77 they are also last in that standing. At the same time they are quite low in the xg created so it kind of can be said that they have been overperforming a bit with luck not against them. Last week against Standard away, they just opted to defend knowing Standard would have a hard time to score which resulted in a 0-0 draw also because they played most of the match with 10 players. Away against Dender they actually were the underdog which kind of was justified based on the match picture even though they took a draw. In their last home match they started out pretty good until the point where the ref did them wrong which shook them up and caused a 1-4 loss against Union. They recently in week 12 played against Cercle away where it was a fair draw but where they also were the slight better team overall. Zulte-Wargem has been a team who crushed their asian handicap mainly because they have been on the good side of variance and I do expect things to regress to the mean. Cercle Brugge has been in a corner where they are getting hit now sitting in 2nd last place with 3 losses in a row and their coach under heavy fire. They haven't been bad and you can easily see that they are a team that doesn't belong in the place they are in now but at the same time they just keep losing match after match with zero momentum. In their last 5 matches they had a total of 8.13xg which resulted in 5 goals while the 6.98xg agains resulted in 9 goals against. They are now the favorite away in Zulte and I kind of can see why but it's impossible for me to back a team with this kind of momentum. Zulte-Waregem at home failed to win their corners in the last 6 home matches but at the same time, Cercle only managed to win the corners away once. For now, I have no clue what to think of this match so I'm staying away. This might very well be the match where the momentums continue and it's the final match for the current Cercle Coach, or it might be a match where both teams have regression to the mean with a deserved away win.
No Pre-Game Bets
Charleroi vs La Louviere
Charleroi in the past weeks hasn't played that badly and showed to be willing to go forward but at the same time did not 100% convince of the offensive end which poses the question whet they will be able to do at home against one of the more and better defensive teams in the league today. They will be without Van Den Kerkhof who has been one of their better players this season. La Louviere has been a low xg team this season both on the offense and in the defene but in the last coupld of weeks, their xg against has gone up quite a bit to an average of 1.63. Their under matches also mainly come at home on their artificial pitch which causes problems for the opponents while away they average a lot higher goals. The big question though remains the Charleroi offense which I see as the reason why the total line is low at 2.25. Charleroi is the 4th best 1H home team in the league with only 1 loss there and I can see a match picture where La Louviere crawls back and Charleroi trying to start hot and forward. So I'm leaning toward Charleroi on the 1H corners with some kind of insurance on Charleroi 1H -0.25 as they tend to crawl back in case they take the lead.
