"War is racket"- Maj Gen Smedley D Butler

I am sure you have read the speech or at least heard of it before. Butler is a Marine legend, two time Medal of Honor recipient, among several other awards. Could be argued he should have earned three, but that's beside the point. The man served in several conflicts over his many years of service in the Marines. I read the book Maverick Marine, about him, before ever seeing or reading his War is a Racket speech. It helped shape my views of war and conflict to this day.

Just because we raised our hand, said a pledge, and wore a new "outfit", doesn't mean we believe in "bad things", for sure. Great reply, to @dbooster awesome post. This deserves a @topcomment

I have read his speech before, but it was years ago so I had forgotten most of it. Thank you for reminding me — I just reread the speech and I'll see if I can get ahold of his book where he expands the argument.

The book Maverick Marine is a good one as well and might give you insight into what made the man himself.
