Enramadas, the street of life in Santiago de Cuba 🛣️ (eng-esp)

Returning to making my #WednesdayWalk habitual, I have had difficulties when deciding what to show every Wednesday. I am an enthusiast of this initiative and this community, so I try to put as much effort as possible into the publications. After analyzing the geography of my city I have decided to show my walk through a place at the height of the cultural and architectural wealth of Santiago.

Enramadas Street is another characteristic symbol of my city. It is very likely that only a fragment of this street appears in tourist guides, to the point that when I grew up and found out that it was much longer, I was surprised myself. The point is that the part of Enramadas that everyone knows begins just after the Plaza de Marte, and is recognizable because from here the way to vehicles is closed and the street is cobbled, ideal for the transfer of those who prefer to walk.

At the entrance we are greeted by this large metal grille, the purpose of which I have never managed to understand 😂, although I must highlight that on festive nights they make LED cable arrangements that resemble the colors of the flag. Also in this first section are carved in bronze fragments of poems that will be replicated all along the street.

Another place of great relevance that welcomes us when we enter is the Tomás Romay Natural History Museum. It is a place of high heritage value for everything it preserves and shows day by day. Currently the children enter amazed by the toy dinosaurs that they installed in the central pavilion, and parents and workers take advantage of this hook to take them to tour the entire museum, thus guaranteeing the enjoyment of the hand of learning.

Something that also deserves to be pointed out is that on the floor of Enramadas Street there are not only cobblestones, but there are also small works of art in bronze and designs made with earthenware. And what cannot be missing in this street, which I think is what identifies it the most, is the number of people you can find here at any time of the day. It's amazing! Seeing a desolate Enramadas is a cause for concern and even sadness.

Being this a busy place, we can see all kinds of shops, both state and private. Clothing stores, shoes, food, and everything you can imagine. But I think right now the favorite spot is Cheny's Ice Cream Shop, where they sell the best ice cream I've ever tasted (and apparently most of the population agrees with me).

Then there are two of the four parks that cross this street. This one I show is the Subway Park, a place that used to be very crowded because there is a bar underground. The other park is the Serrano Park, which connects key points of the entire area.

Between these points there are two other places that I want to mention. The first is the El Ingenio Multicultural Center, and I think that right now it is the busiest in all of Santiago. Almost every day there are musical groups performing, in addition to having a cafeteria inside to consume different offers during the concerts.

Do you see this huge poster? This is the La California store, the one with the highest prestige historically. Now, unfortunately, it is a cause of shame for many. Currently this store charges in USD, a currency that is extremely difficult for everyone to get, since in Cuba it is not paid in this currency. For this reason, now the store is mostly desolate...

But to return to the joy, now I show you the "Amadeo Roldán" bookstore, and inside it there are also the publishing house Ediciones Santiago and the José Soler Puig Literary Promotion Center. This is the ideal place for book lovers, that is, me 😂.

Further down (I know, this seems like an endless hill) is the Imperial Hotel, which I already talked about on a past occasion, and just opposite is the Chess Park. This is a rather curious and striking place. It has a complex and sophisticated architecture and on its marble tables are inscribed chess boards. It's funny because there are usually more people here drinking coffee than playing chess.

Two points that I find super interesting are two squares that are very close to each other. In both there are many tents and cubicles where artisans can sell their creations. And I could not fail to mention the Gallo Street Park, which is the last one to be found on this street and which is recognized for the large-scale sculpture of a rooster precisely.

Another place that I love for its architecture is the coppelia The Enramadas Garden. Many of my childhood memories are in this place. There used to be a great variety of ice creams and combinations. Currently the price of ice cream is above its quality, but it is still a tempting option from time to time.

Almost at the end of this long walk is the last place I wanted to highlight. This is the Alegrémonos Fair, a new space that they have opened for children. Birthdays are celebrated here, parties are held with clowns and even children's books are presented. It is the ideal place for the little ones at home.

This beautiful street, already at the end, gives way to the Promenade "La Alameda". I took advantage and kept walking around right there to get to my work. I arrived late and sweaty, but I was happy, because my Actifit app had registered more than 5000 steps.

Enramadas, la calle de la vida en Santiago de Cuba.

Volviendo a hacer habituales mis #WednesdayWalk, he tenido dificultades a la hora de decidir qué mostrar cada miércoles. Soy un entusiasta de esta iniciativa y de esta comunidad, así que trato de poner el mayor empeño posible en las publicaciones. Luego de analizar la geografía de mi ciudad he decidido mostrar mi caminata a través de un lugar a la altura de la riqueza cultural y arquitectónica de Santiago.

La calle Enramadas es otro símbolo característico de mi ciudad. Es muy probable que en guías turísticas sólo aparezca un fragmento de esta calle, al punto que cuando crecí y me enteré de que era mucho más larga, yo mismo me sorprendí. El punto es que la parte de Enramadas que todo el mundo conoce comienza justo después de la Plaza de Marte, y es reconocible pues a partir de aquí se cierra el paso a los vehículos y la calle está adoquinada, ideal para el traslado de los que preferimos caminar.

A la entrada nos recibe esta gran reja de metal, cuyo objetivo jamás he logrado comprender 😂, aunque debo resaltar que en noches de festividad hacen arreglos de cables led que asemejan los colores de la bandera. También en este primer tramo están tallados en bronce fragmentos de poemas que se irán replicando a lo largo de Enramadas.

Otro lugar de gran relevancia que nos recibe al entrar es el Museo de Historia Natural Tomás Romay. Es un lugar de alto valor patrimonial por todo lo que conserva y muestra día a día. Actualmente los niños entran asombrados por los dinosaurios de juguete que instalaron en el pabellón central, y los padres y trabajadores aprovechan este gancho para llevarlos a recorrer todo el museo, garantizando así el disfrute de la mano del aprendizaje.

Algo que también merece ser señalado es que en el suelo de la calle Enramadas no sólo están los adoquines, sino que también hay pequeñas obras de arte en bronce y diseños hechos con loza. Y lo que no puede faltar en esta calle, que creo que es lo que más la identifica, es la cantidad de personas que podrás encontrar aquí a cualquier hora del día. ¡Es increíble! Ver Enramadas desolada es motivo de preocupación e incluso tristeza.

Al ser este un lugar tan transitado, podemos ver todo tipo de tiendas, tanto estatales como particulares. Tiendas de ropa, zapatos, alimentos, y todo lo que se pueda imaginar. Pero creo que ahora mismo el punto favorito es la Heladería Cheny's, donde venden el mejor helado que he probado jamás (y al parecer la mayor parte de la población está de acuerdo conmigo).

Luego están dos de los cuatro parques que atraviesan esta calle. Este que muestro es el parque del Subway, un lugar que antes era muy concurrido pues hay un bar bajo tierra. El otro parque es el parque Serrano, que conecta puntos clave de toda la zona.

Entre estos puntos hay otros dos lugares que quiero mencionar. El primero es el Centro Multicultural El Ingenio, y creo que ahora mismo es el de mayor actividad en todo Santiago. Casi a diario hay grupos musicales presentándose, además de que tienen dentro una cafetería para consumir distintas ofertas durante los conciertos.

¿Ven este cartel inmenso? Se trata de la tienda La California, la de más alto prestigio históricamente. Ahora, lamentablemente, es motivo de vergüenza para muchos. Actualmente esta tienda cobra en USD, moneda que es tremendamente difícil conseguir para todos, ya que en Cuba no se paga en esta moneda. Por esta razón, ahora la tienda está mayormente desolada...

Pero para volver a la alegría, ahora les muestro la librería "Amadeo Roldán", y dentro de ella también se encuentran la editorial Ediciones Santiago y el Centro de Promoción Literaria José Soler Puig. Este es el lugar ideal para los amantes de los libros, es decir, yo 😂.

Más abajo (lo sé, esto parece una loma interminable) está el Hotel Imperial, del cual ya hablé en una ocasión pasada, y justo enfrente se encuentra el Parque de Ajedrez. Este es un lugar bastante curioso y llamativo. Tiene una arquitectura compleja y sofisticada y en sus mesas de mármol están inscritos tableros de ajedrez. Es gracioso porque normalmente aquí hay más personas tomando café que jugando ajedrez.

Dos puntos que me parecen súper interesantes son dos plazas que se encuentran muy cerca una de otra. En ambas hay muchas carpas y cubículos donde los artesanos pueden vender sus creaciones. Y no podía dejar de mencionar el parque de la Calle Gallo, el cual es el último a encontrarse en esta calle y que es reconocido por la escultura a gran escala de un gallo precisamente.

Otro sitio que me encanta por su arquitectura es el coppelia El Jardín de las Enramadas. Muchos de mis recuerdos de niño son en este lugar. Antes había gran variedad de helados y combinaciones. Actualmente el precio del helado está por encima de su calidad, pero aún sigue siendo una opción tentadora de vez en cuando.

Ya casi al final de esta larga caminata se encuentra el último sitio que quería resaltar. Se trata de la Feria Alegrémonos, un nuevo espacio que han abierto para los niños. Aquí se celebran cumpleaños, se hacen fiestas con payasos e incluso se presentan libros infantiles. Es el lugar idóneo para los más pequeños de casa.

Esta hermosa calle, ya al final, da paso al Paseo "La Alameda". Aproveché y seguí caminando por ahí mismo para llegar a mi trabajo. Llegué tarde y sudado, pero estaba feliz, pues mi app de Actifit había registrado más de 5000 pasos.
