The Bottleneck of Self: Why Linear Goals Are Killing Your Dreams

What if those linear, long-term goals we all have been prescribed are what's really holding us back? All our lives we've been told things like "one step at a time" and "have realistic expectations", but the more we take a step back to study those who have broken free from the rat race, especially the 1st-generation millionaires, the more we're met with the fact that "curse-breaking" success is the result of what many would label radical mindsets. Radical self-confidence, radical timelines, and radical standards are often the primary drivers. Slow and steady doesn't win the race in the age of acceleration.

Logical is Linear, Be Radical

Why are we so logical when it comes to actually pursuing our dreams? It makes no sense when you say it aloud, minimizing the desires of the heart by anticipating outcomes that are lackluster and/or don't serve us. Our dreams are typically disassociated from any linear progression when we envision them, but once we attempt to place our current self in that future scenario, the route gets cloudy and the end result seems unattainable.

This is what I call the bottleneck of the self - when your own mental drag and linear habits become the primary ceiling on your progress. It's where passion meets friction. But is it really the logic that fails, or is it the filter we're using? Is it because pursuing our true desires requires us to be the person first? The person that embraces that radical transformation.

The Observer as Your Filter

So what is this transformation? It is the result of a clearly defined, top-of-mind, future state. Regardless of their current circumstance, this person starts to actually operate from the best version of their future self.

But here's what most miss: this isn't about willpower or hustle. It's about perspective.

In ancient Hindu philosophy, there's the concept of sakshi—the witness. The Mundaka Upanishad describes two golden birds perched on the same tree. One eats the fruits (the ego, engaged in experience and outcomes). The other simply watches, untouched. Your current self is the bird eating. Your realized self is the bird observing.

The radical transformation happens when you flip which bird makes your decisions.

Using your future self as a filter means you're not trying harder - you're changing who's in the driver's seat. Your best version will by default say "no" a lot more because it operates at a much higher standard than you do currently. Remember, they (you) have already reached the goal. They are a product of choices that are far removed from the logical, linear thinking pattern you've impressed on the subconscious for years.

This isn't philosophy. When I stopped chasing hustle and moved toward architecture and clarity - everything shifted. The overnight shift didn't change. My energy didn't suddenly multiply. But my operational density did. And it happened the moment I started filtering decisions through a clearer vision of who I was becoming, not who I was.

Living this way created a very new and distinct feeling of being aggressively pulled towards my dreams by my future self. Waves were collapsing, time was folding. My 5 year goals shrunk to 2 years. My yearly objectives, I've compressed into a 90-day sprint. Time is subjective.

Peace and Light
