Who Cares?

That's a powerful phrase, yet I think a good portion of us would take offense to it at face value. Did it stir up an emotion or thought when you saw the title? I'll admit, I had mixed feelings about choosing this for the title of the post. Despite this, it's an important phrase to remember.

In my job, I manage people. I monitor their performance, provide feedback related to areas of improvement, give tips and tricks, and help them in their professional development.

One particular aspect I coach on is for certain trained agents who have the privilege of promoting services offered by a company we partner with. If the customer signs up, these agents earn Amazon gift cards and incentive bonuses paid out monthly. I was previously one of these agents, and I was bringing in $120-200/month in Amazon gift cards and anywhere from $300-800/month in incentive payouts. Money isn't everything, but it certainly helps, but it's also a job requirement for these agents.

With that said, I have a challenge with two of my employees who like the incentives, but I believe are holding themselves back because of their own fear of rejection. I learned early on not to care what other people think about me, and it's served me well. I will do what's right regardless of the cost, and if others don't like it, that's too bad. Perhaps that's why it came relatively easy for me to offer this service, because I didn't care if someone told me "no." I offered, they declined, and that was it. I'd wish them a great day and move on to helping the next customer.

I foresee my challenge with these two will be not just telling them to stop caring if people say "no," but to also not dwell on it. We can easily become trapped in our own fears and insecurities while we let opportunities move past us without giving them more than a passing glance. I think in my spare time I may look into consulting expert sources on how others recommend overcoming this internalized fear. I'm not so proud that I won't admit I'll take any help I can get, especially when they'll ultimately be better for it.

In the end, this will be good. It'll help both me and them grow. We can't be perfect, but we can pursue excellence, which I believe is always worth the effort. We try our best, improve a little bit at a time, and before we know it we've gone from crawling to walking. We'll stumble and fall until we get there, but even if we do, who cares?
