Mexican Cartels Leave Questions on Future Silver Prices

Mexico is a dangerous place. The cartels, especially the Sinaloa cartel, have a wide reach. The money they bring in from illegal drugs buys them firepower far more advanced than the Mexican military, which means they're largely operating with impunity. It's a sad state of affairs.

Lately, the Sinaloa cartel kidnapped miners from a Canadian silver mining company. Sadly, they even killed a few of them. (Source) The motives are unclear, but I'm sure there's a profit angle for them somewhere.

There have been a lot of theories as to what might happen with silver prices. I was expecting a tamp from the COMEX and LBMA while the Chinese aren't actively buying during the celebration of their lunar new year, but that never materialized. The demand for silver is outpacing the yearly global supply, so with Mexican silver production and exports now in question, that exacerbates an existing supply crunch. Mexico alone exported almost 203,000,000 ounces of silver in 2024. (Source)

Imagine taking even a small chunk of that out of global supply. That's going to put further pressure on the price. None of us know what will happen with the price of silver, but typically when supply is drastically cut and already in short supply, prices only go up. We may seem some desperate shenanigans from the COMEX and LBMA, but we might be in for another roller coaster ride as far as price is concerned. Only time will tell.

Yes, this was bound to happen.

But, it is hard to say where its going to go… but it goes to the extreme, one way or the other.

As silver prices continue to increase, there is a point in time where small armies can be purchased.

Soooo…

  1. The cartels become big business and protect their mines, steady output, and basically go from lawless to the law (as in, steady, known rules)

  2. Mercenaries are hired, come in, and wipe out the cartels.

  3. We get automated, AI, drones and gun turrets that actively protect the mine and miners.

At $100 the mines become targets of opportunity. At $1000 silver, the owners (who ever that ends up being) hires enough military to become the new govern-cement.

Which one? I am betting large, international corporations become the new owners, meaning corps with a military division. Totally not future dystopian.

I bet the cartels can smell honest money when they see it and get a piece of the action. No miner is safe. And that wildcard will not grant the bullion bankers much sleep tonight. The market hates uncertainty.

This won’t have much long term effect on price at all. To many other factors and to little chance this is going where all the hype and fear YouTube & media talking heads claim. If worst case scenarios do happen which is unlikely, it could for a medium term but I think it’s doubtful.

Sounds like the orange man needs to work out a deal with the Mexican president for the US military to offer protection for all of that precious stuff he was hoping to find in Greenland.

Yeah, at this rate the US may need to intervene just to keep the borders safe. With lots of extra funding, the cartels are only going to become more bold.

I saw that they were telling people down there to shelter in place. That's pretty scary. So much for your relaxing vacation! It makes Canada look like a nice alternative if you just want to get out of the country!
