Is It Time to Rethink Stacking War Nickels?
Most stackers want as pure silver as possible. A lot of us will happily stack 90%, or junk silver. Some will even stack 40% silver. When you ask people if they'll stack war nickels there's a noticeable pause.
For those who aren't familiar with war nickels, they are nickels that contain 35% silver. That's about 0.05 ounces of silver. With silver hovering around $80/ounce, that means each war nickel is worth about $4 each at spot.

War nickels were made from 1942-1945, and they only contain silver if they have a P, D or S mint mark above the Monticello. What is the Monticello? It's Thomas Jefferson's home.

For decades these went unloved because they contained very little silver and were hard to resell. Still, some continued to stack them. The refiner I use will accept them, but they'll at best offer you 60% of the silver reclaimed because it takes far more acid to dissolve and separate the copper and manganese out. With each war nickel being worth $4 each, and possibly more when spot continues its upward trajectory, is it time to rethink stacking them?

STOPI have a few of these nickels.
If the price of silver goes high and critical enough then it's worth hanging on to some.

Definitely worth holding if already bought and saving for the real big explosion when fiat fails eventually, but I’ve got a bunch, 10 rolls actually but I definitely regret stacking so much random stuff. I got those PAMP fractional gram bars to complete a set and it just was a huge waste of money. I only do 1 ounce rounds and kilo & 100 ounce bars now. Ya live ya learn! Collecting is fun but when u end up with hundreds of ounces in this stuff with lower resale value, ya realize simple is better. Just my opinion after 15 years or so of stacking to some degree, the collecting gram silver bars was the biggest mistake. !LADY !PIZZA
Well, when silver bars and coins were only like $5 each. There was no reason to reach into the "bottom of the barrel". Why carry around all that industrial metal along with your silver?
Today, you take what you can get.
In the future, you will take silver plated silverware. Mirrors, even, or especially broken mirrors. I mean, like anything. Soon we will be recovering silver like we do gold from every little electronics item.
Soooo, my experience with war nickles? Well, i found one in circulation and collected it. Got one of those blue foldy collector books almost complete.
I thought there was a tube of war nickels around here somewhere. Not sure where they are now though. They must have walked off. Haven't seen them in a long time. I always found them and the steel wheat cent interesting parts of coin history from WWII.
I've always stacked war nickels. They are affordable and have silver, although you get less return at refiners. But they have been a great investment for me, most of mine I bought back when silver was $7 per ounce, so it's a win no matter what!
