Hacksaws, Jig Saws and Acetylene Torches

We had just finished celebrating my niece's third birthday at my in-laws' house after lunch. It was time for her nap, so everyone said their goodbyes and they left for home. My wife, two boys and I stayed behind because the kids were still hungry. Not long after their post-lunch snack, my four-year-old's eyes got heavy and he was out, so we decided to let him nap there.

My oldest son is seven, so he stayed up with us. We decided to watch some TV and came across a show called "Super Dad." For those who aren't familiar with the show, the star is a man named Taylor, who gained notoriety on YouTube as "Dude Dad." Think of him as a modern MacGyver, building fun inventions like a rocketship ride from some 2x4s, a leaf blower and a ball bearing swivel. They were in the process of cutting aluminum poles to build a pop-up golf driving net for some kids, when my son spoke up and said, "Wait, they can cut metal with a saw?" My father-in-law and I piped up, explained how it was possible, and then he offered to show him. He agreed, and off we went on a mini weekend adventure.

My father-in-law brought out the acetylene torch and showed it to my son first. He kept his distance, and then slowly started backing away as my father-in-law began cutting through a strip of scrap metal. By the time he was done, my son had backed up a good six or seven feet, but was still mesmerized by what he saw.

When my son saw the end result, he was amazed at how quickly the torch melted through the metal.

My father-in-law showed him the jig saw next. He explained how it worked and demonstrated it using a piece of scrap wood.

The blade was a bit too dull to quickly cut through the scrap metal. It started a small notch, but didn't get much further.

He tried moving the small piece of scrap metal to a vice on his work bench to cut it horizontally, but the blade wasn't up to the task. He explained to my son he probably needed to buy a new set for cutting metal since the current blade had become dull.

He showed him the hacksaw last and made quick work of the small piece of scrap metal. My son was amazed at how quickly he got through it with the hacksaw.

Sadly, my son lost interest before we could show him that he could weld the metal back together with my father-in-law's arc welder, so we'll have to save that for another adventure. It was a fun experience to share with my son and teach him about some tools in a fun way.

We headed back inside to finish watching Super Dad. My son insisted on playing a round of chess, and shortly after we finished my youngest son woke up from his nap, so we packed up and headed home for the afternoon. It was a busy Saturday, packed with a lot of fun, and we made some great memories along the way!
