Don't Buy Jewelry as an Investment

Jewelry is beautiful. It's meant to make a statement. It's meant to be art. It's meant to be a lot of things, but it's not meant to be an investment.

I recently came across a post in the gold subreddit. A gentleman was asking if his 14k gold Cuban-style chain he bought in 2024 was a "good investment."

The man originally took $24,000 out of his retirement. Red Flag Number One. Sure, it's risen in value since then because the price of gold has dramatically increased. Now, he's stating he sent it to the jeweler to add 180 grams. Red Flag Number Two. The "new appraised value" should now be between $61,000-63,000. According to whom? His jeweler? Jewelry is worth what someone else will pay for it.

This ring that I bought I paid a significant premium over melt value for it. Even if you factor in the premium for the gold nuggets, I bought it because I like the beauty of it. Yes it's gold, but I'm not fooling myself into thinking this will become some amazing investment vehicle.

Don't be like the guy in this post. If you want gold for investment, buy the cheapest pure gold rounds or coins you can. Buying jewelry as an investment is likely going to backfire on you, because it is highly unlikely you'll recoup the premium.
