Death of A Sterling Mirror

A few days ago I received another load of scrap. This one is a little sad. I have no issue scrapping broken pieces. I have no issue scrapping ugly pieces. I once went so far as to scrap a damaged Sterling flute, but it's sad when nice Sterling pieces end up as scrap.

To be fair, the Sterling mirror came to me like this. Part of me hopes it was already broken at some point and wasn't salvageable.

As with all of these lots, I look for the Sterling mark.

Bingo! The "Cemented" part means the interior was filled with cement for weight and structure, rather than making it out of solid Sterling silver. Just to be safe, I ran a Neodymium magnet across all of the pieces. Nothing stuck to it, so we're golden. They say if you spend enough time listening to the unique sound silver coins and rounds make when you put them through the ping test, you know without needing to go through the rest of the tests. In a similar way, if you've scrapped enough Sterling silver, you know if it's Sterling just from the look, feel and sound it makes when you tap on it.

This lot was advertised as 280 grams, and I got it for 70% under melt. I'll take it! This is one of the better deals I've come across. I'm hoping with the overall refinery backlog this will continue to make it easier to pick up lots of Sterling at a good discount. Off to the refinery we go!

Nice work! Picking up anything under spot is a good thing, especially at 70% under melt! It does suck scrapping nice items, but you are doing this to make money, not get sentimental!
