Are You Voting or Curating?

A while back @acidyo commented on my @nectarbytes account when I announced the creation of a curation trail. It's a very good point, and while I discussed it with him then, it's taken until now to really put this lingering thought in my head into a post that does it justice.

Votes. Outside of Hive I think of this in a political context where we're stating we not only support a particular person's ideals and proposal, but so much so that we're investing our own time to formally document this for an election.

Curation. Outside of Hive I think of this more in an artistic sense, such as with museums, galleries or other public displays. It implies interest, passion and an appreciation for the subject.

Mundane vs Exciting
When I think of "votes," it makes me think of something methodical and logical. It doesn't excite or interest me.

When I think of "curation," it piques my interest because the implication is someone taking the time to select displays that will inspire or provoke a discussion.

A Time and Place
Both voting and curation have their purpose on Hive. We can't separate the methodical from the artistic here, but we can recognize which is which and when we should vote or curate, and vice-versa.

As a social blockchain, I feel like many have forgotten their excitement for great content and instead blindly vote posts based on an author they recognize, the same way they'd blindly vote on a DHF proposal.

Making Time for Curation
I'll be the first to admit I'm not perfect with making time to curate. Life is busy. For those looking for a place to start, consider changing your settings in Hive.Vote. Set it so it'll stop auto-voting people at maybe 85-90% of your voting mana. Set aside time to use up that remaining 10-15% through manual curation.

A Challenge
Like me, some of you are only manually curating. Once you set aside time to do it, the process becomes fun as you stumble upon new content you hadn't seen before. If you're not already doing this, try it. Sure, keep some mana set aside for curation trails you like, but outside of that try curating manually. You don't need to throw out 100% upvotes, but do whatever you feel is best based on how the content made you feel. There's no wrong answer. It's the beauty of curation.

Wow, so I’ve been wrong all this time, huh?

Up until now, I thought the upvote button served the same function as the “like” button on social media. So whenever I liked the content of a post I was reading, or wanted to support the author, or simply as a way of saying thank you, I’d use the upvote button.

After reading this post, I just realized that voting and curation are two different things. I’d never really thought about it before.

No, you haven't been doing it wrong. If you read the post, enjoyed it and upvoted it, then you just manually curated the post. That's how Hive was intended to work. 🙂

Thats a really good point from both of u, i try to look new acc's and the fresh post around (normally spanish ones) with the Ecency make feel i'm doing something for someone, if they take time to write/load pictures/etc... Why not take the time to have a look, sometimes to save mana i vote 1% just to make them feel "hey i see this" between many trash post with AI talking about tokens it's good to feel that human side of blockchain.
Curation trails are good, hive-vote is good for sure, but as u say at certain %.

Even if you can't vote much, a heartfelt comment still goes a long way. It's all about interaction and community. 😁

I sometime get the feeling, that many users comment on my content just to post a comment without saying much. 1 or 2 letter. Seems like spam to be honest.

I'm sorry. That sucks. It's disappointing when you go through all that work and the interaction from some people isn't even low effort. 🙁

Finding that time can be a big ask for a lot of people! :) Not me though!

Yeah, it's easier to start small.

Kudos to you for manually curating! 🫡
