Shadow Hunters SMASh Contest - Round #434 Structural inspection of shadows [Eng/Esp]
Happy Friday, friends of Shadow Hunters! I'm returning from work after an official inspection with the engineers who will certify the teaching laboratory buildings. This is the next phase following the strong earthquake we had two weeks ago, and thankfully, the damage wasn't as severe in the historic center of Caracas and in this part of the university. At most, there were cracks in the walls and some detachment of the frieze, as you can see. The administrative offices were fine, aside from the damage to the walls, which at most will have to be demolished and rebuilt. Then we continued with the second part of the inspection, this time in the teaching laboratories.
I have a lot of affection for these laboratories; we inaugurated them at the end of 2023, and it saddened me to see some parts of the building with cracks. It wasn't just the walls, but also some of the staircases, including the one where we hold our lab sessions. That was actually the area where we spent the most time assessing the damage. It was quite early this morning, and as I was reminiscing about the brief moments I've spent in these spaces, the sun began to rise as usual. With a clear sky, the morning sun began to bathe the building's spaces, creating this shadow of bars and columns on one of the lab walls. I found it quite interesting and thought it worth sharing with you in this SMASH contest round #434.

I took these photos from the entrance to the chemistry labs. I had a strange feeling because, although it was only 7:45 am, I could already hear the sounds of activity in the labs. Today, there's only a deathly silence that only makes me feel worse about everything that's happened, but seeing this shadow brightened my day. Then I went upstairs to where the actual chemistry labs were located, and as you can see, it's more or less similar to the first shadow I captured. The shadows of the building's parallel columns rise up; it's in that open space that the light enters, creating this wonderful shadow. And if you look below, you'll see a horizontal shadow that rises at an angle; it's the shadow of the stair railing, which is captured in this composition of shadows with shapes that have a strong geometric component, very appropriate for an applied science lab.
When we finished the structural inspection, the engineers came away with good news: most of the cracks are minor and can be repaired. It will likely take three months of restoration work, but that's much better than declaring the building high-risk and uninhabitable. The last test needed is a leak test to rule out any gas leaks. I left quite relieved with this news and, of course, happy because I managed to capture this shadow and the surrounding circumstances in the process. Feliz viernes amigos de Shadow Hunters! Estoy regresando regresando del trabajo, después de hacer una inspección oficial con los ingenieros que certificarám los edificios de los laboratorios docentes. Se trata de la siguiente fase posterior al fuerte sismo que tuvimos hace ya 2 semanas y gracias a la providencia los daños no fueron tan severos en el centro histório de Caracas y en esta parte de la universidad. Como mucho se registraron grietas en paredes y desprendimiento del friso como pueden ver. Las oficinas administrativas estaban bien más alla de los daños de las paredes que como mucho habrán que tumbar y reconstruir nuevamente. Luego continuamos la segunda parte de la inspección, esta vez en los laboratorios docentes.
Tengo mucho sentimiento por estos laboratorios, los inauguramos a finales del año 2023 y me dio tristeza ver algunas partes del edificio con grietas. No solo eran las pareced, sino también algunas de las escaleras, entre ellas en las que impartimos las prácticas de laboratorio, fue de hecho la parte donde más estuvimos evaluando los daños. Eso fue bastante temprano el día de hoy, mientras recordaba los breves momentos que he vivido en estos espacios, el sol comenzó a despuntar como siempre, con un cielo despejado el sol mañanero comenzó a bañar los espacios del edificio y generó esta sombra de barras y columnas sobre una de las paredes del laboratorio y que me pareció bastante curiosa y que valdría la pena compartirla con ustedes en este concurso SMASH round #434.

Estas sombras las tomé desde el acceso de los laboratorios de la escuela de química, tenía una sensación extraña porque si bien apenas eran las 7:45 am ya a esa hora se escuchaba el ruido de la actividad de los laboratorios, hoy solo hay un silencio sepulcral que solo puede hacerme sentir peor con todo esto que ha pasado, pero ver esta sombra me alegró el día. Luego subí al piso de arriba donde ya estaba propiamente los laboratorios de la escuela de química y como pueden ver es más o menos similar a la primera sombra que capturé, se levantan las sombras de las columnas paralelas del edificio, es en ese espacio abierto que la luz entra generando esta maravillosa sombra y si ves abajo aparece una sombra horizontal que se levanta de forma inclinada, es la sombra de la baranda de las escaleras que quedan plasmadas en esta composición de sombras con un formas que tienen un fuerte componente geométrico muy apropiado para un laboratorio de ciencias aplicadas.
Cuando terminamos la inspección estructural, los ingenieros concluyeron con buenas noticias, la mayoría de las grietas son leves y pueden reconstruirse, que tomará posiblemente 3 meses de trabajos de restauración pero es mucho mejor que declarar el edificio como de alto riesgo e imposible de habitar. La última prueba que hace falta por llevar acabo es una prueba de hermeticidad para descartar que haya alguna fuga de gas. Me fui bastante aliviado con estas noticias y por supuesto feliz porque en el proceso conseguí capturar esta sombra y las circunstancias que la rodearon porque estos últimos días ha amanecido nublado y me había sido difícil conseguir sombras para esta ocasión.
