Shadow Hunters SMASh Contest - Round #424 Shadows in the practice assembly [Eng/Esp]
What's up, Shadow Hunters community? Hoping you are enjoying this long weekend, today I come to share my usual contribution to this week's SMASH contest in its round #424. After two years as lab coordinator, it's been impossible to find students willing to take on the role of lab assistant to help me with all the work behind each lab session. So, I'm stuck doing all the lab work myself: getting distilled water, washing equipment, preparing solutions, sterilizing glassware, and even teaching the practical classes! It's such a draining process that by the end of the semester, I simply have no energy left to do anything else.
But when it comes to fulfilling my teaching duties, I always have to give it my all. And so I started the day early in the lab storage room and was greeted by this wonderful shadow cast by the first rays of sunlight. This shadow was created by the window frames in the storage room. If you look through them, you'll have a view of the eastern side of Mount Ávila with the clouds parting to reveal a clear sky. That's when I realized we'd have a sunny day. The sun was already rising over the teaching lab buildings and beginning to bathe the interiors, including the storage room where I was organizing everything needed for the lab, projecting the shadow onto the lab bench.

Initially, the shadow was barely projected, as the buildings across the street blocked the sun. After an hour, all the light was flooding the storage room, revealing not only the shadow of the window frame but also that of the basket where I had prepared some isotonic sodium chloride solutions. I loved the symmetrical squares cast by the basket's shadow. This basket, covered with a blue sheet, is a metal autoclaving (sterilizing) box for glassware. The partial shadow it casts is from the sheet covering it; it's not as dramatic as the basket's shadow, but it's important to consider the shade it provides, however modest.
It was a long day in the lab, and a bit depressing to see the lab conditions. They were already bad last year, but now, with this dark forest outbreak we've been experiencing since January 3rd, things haven't improved one bit in Venezuela. In fact, I'm starting to think they're only going to get worse. But I must say that during all this time we've learned to cultivate a strong stoic and resilient spirit, learning to value the smallest things, like enjoying that sunny morning in the lab and the shadows it gifted me to share with you. Que tal comunidad de Shadow Hunters! Esperando que estén disfrutando este largo fin de semana hoy vengo a compartirles mi acostumbrado aporte al concurso SMASH de esta semana en su round #424. La sombra que les traigo hoy es producto de un día difícil en el laboratorio, después de 2 años siendo coordinador del laboratorio ha sido imposible conseguir estudiantes que acepten el cargo de asistente de laboratorio y así poderme ayudar con todo el trabajo detrás de cada una de las prácticas de laboratorio. Me toca por tanto asumir todo el trabajo de laboratorio, conseguir agua destilada, lavar material, preparar soluciones, esterilizar el material de vidrio y también dar las clases prácticas! Es un proceso tan desgastante que cuando termina el semestre simplemente no me quedan energías para hacer más nada.
Pero cuando se trata de cumplir con el deber de la docencia, siempre hay que entregarse completamente. Y así comencé el día temprano en el depósito del laboratorio y me encontré con esta maravilla de sombra generada por los primeros rayos de luz solar, esta sombra se generaba por los marcos del ventanal del depósito, si ves a través de ellos tendrás una vista del lado este del cerro Ávila con las nubes abriendo paso a un cielo despejado ahí me di cuenta que tendríamos todo el día soleado ya el sol se levantaba sobre los edificios de laboratorios docentes y comenzaba a bañar el interior de los edificios incluyendo el depósito donde estaba organizando todo lo necesario para el laboratorio, proyectando la sombra sobre el mesón del laboratorio.

Inicialmente la sombra apenas se estaba proyectado ya que los edificios que estaban al frente ocultaban el sol luego de una hora ya estaba entrando toda la luz al depósito mostrando no solo la sombra del marco del ventanal, sino el de la cesta donde había hecho unas soluciones de cloruro de sodio isotónico, me encantó la simetría de los cuadros que dejaba la sombra de la cesta, caja que esta cubierta con la manta azul es una caja metálica para autoclavar (esterilizar) material de vidrio, la sombra parcial que deja es la de la manta que la esta cubriendo, no es tan genial como el de la cesta pero es importante considerar la sombra que aporta, aunque sea muy modesta.
Fue una jornada larga ese día de laboratorio y un poco deprimente ver las condiciones del laboratorio, ya eran malas desde el año pasado, pero ahora con este ataque de bosque oscuro que hemos recibido desde el 3 de enero, las cosas no han mejorado ni un poco en Venezuela, de hecho estoy comenzando a pensar que solo va a empeorar. Pero al menos debo decir que en todo este tiempo hemos aprendido a cultivar un fuerte espíritu estoico y de resiliencia, aprendiendo a valorar las cosas más pequeñas, como lo ha sido disfrutar de esa mañana soleada en el laboratorio y las sombras que me ha regalado para compartirlas con ustedes.
