My #BeerSaturday Challenge! Week 435: 2x1 Beer Review: Peregrina & Morena Beers [Eng/Esp]

Hello friends of Beer and hivers, welcome to my participation in this week's #BeerSaturday Challenge, which, as always, was a night with my Discord friends. As I've mentioned before, I take advantage of these moments to discover the different beer varieties available on the Venezuelan market, both commercial and craft. In that spirit, today I'm bringing you two beers that were off my radar for a long time but that I finally managed to get my hands on: Peregrina and Morena. But before we begin, I want to invite my good friend @freed99 to join this fantastic initiative and share a beer from our sister country, Colombia.
Let's start with Peregrina beer. This is a relatively new beer on the market, brewed in Aragua State, Venezuela. Like many other beers trying to carve out a niche for themselves, they have to fight against the monopoly of the country's leading brand, Polar. As a result, many good beers that strive to do things right, producing an original style of beer, struggle to reach establishments in the rest of the country. This is the case with Peregrina, which is extremely difficult to find in liquor stores. I searched relentlessly for this particular brand until I finally found it in a small grocery store, and they only had one bottle left. So, without hesitation, I wanted to try it and share my impressions.
This is a 5% ABV Pilsner-style beer with a brewing process typical of German pilsners. This is the main reason I wanted to try it, as this beer brand is directly influenced by the German colony in Venezuela called Colonia Tovar. The first thing that catches your eye is the great design of the bottle; it has a lot of information about its production, the alcohol content, the optimal temperature, color, and bitterness. I love it when a beer bottle comes with these details because it gives an idea of the care put into its production.

I had high expectations for this beer. I had previously tried a craft beer from Colonia Tovar and hoped to find that same unique flavor here. So, we opened this beer and poured it slowly into our beer mug. The pale yellow color was already activating my taste buds, although I was surprised by the small amount of foam it produced, since a foamy beer is usually synonymous with being very refreshing.

Once I had poured the entire beer, I started sipping it while chatting with my friends on Discord, and this beer certainly lived up to expectations! Its refreshing flavor, with herbal and floral aromas and a smooth bitterness at the end, gives it that characteristic taste of these beers that follow the same traditions of Colonia Tovar. I savored every sip of this beer. Unfortunately, it only comes in a 250ml bottle, which felt like far too little considering how good it was, and I only had one bottle! In short, this beer reminded me of those early days in Venezuela in 2020 when these first beers, which started as small businesses, filled the void left by the big brands in the market, becoming truly competitive alternatives.
knew I was going to be unsatisfied with that Peregrina beer, and in the end, I was. I was left wanting more! Then I remembered the great review my esteemed @ineyashami wrote about Morena lager, so I decided to give it a try since I wasn't going to be left with the feeling of having only one beer. I usually see this beer in cans, and to be honest, I prefer bottled beer because I can let it chill, creating that "bride-dressed" effect that gives bottled beer such a refreshing taste. So I opened this bottle and started pouring, and the first thing I liked was the generous amount of foam. It's practically a given, especially here in the Caribbean where it's hot most of the time. When a beer produces that kind of creamy foam, it's a sure sign of a refreshing drink.

This beer is also Venezuelan, primarily from the state of Zulia, and to my surprise, the brewery that produces this brand is 96 years old, meaning it's about to celebrate its centenary. Their most recent product is this lager, as they started out making pilsner-style beers like Regional. But overall, this dark beer lives up to its name with its strong amber color, and its frothy appearance invites you to try it. And indeed, it's quite refreshing, with a noticeable malty flavor, sweet and toasted notes. It's more bitter than Peregrina, but overall, it's quite good.

Minutes passed, and while enjoying Splinterlands tournaments with my friends, I savored every sip of this dark beer. Now, to be completely honest and to conclude, which was better? Peregrina or Morena? Both were quite refreshing and had a very distinctive flavor, but if I had to choose, I'd go with Peregrina beer, which I give an 8.5/10. It's simply a delight to taste, and although it's not as foamy as its counterpart, Morena, its unique flavor has completely won me over. Morena beer isn't bad; I'd give it a 7.5/10. It's fine for hanging out with friends at a bar, but it doesn't have the boldness to try something different like Peregrina does. Well, friends, that concludes this double review, but it doesn't mean it's the end for these two brands, as they have different presentations that I plan to bring you so you can discover them in future #BeerSaturday challenges. Hola amigos de Beer y hivers, les doy la bienvenida a mi participación en el #BeerSaturday Challenge de esta semana, que como siempre fue una noche con mis amigos de Discord. Como ya he comentado antes aprovecho estos momentos para descubrir las distintas versiones de cerveza que puedo encontrar en el mercado venezolano ya sean comerciales o artesanales, y en ese contexto hoy te traigo 2 cervezas que estuvieron fuera de mi radar por mucho tiempo pero que finalmente logré conseguir: las cervezas Peregrina y Morena. Pero antes de comenzar quiero invitar a esta magnífica iniciativa a mi buen amigo @freed99 para que nos comparta alguna birra de la hermana Colombia.
Comencemos por la cerveza Peregrina, esta es una cerveza relativamente reciente en el mercado, es fabricada en el Estado Aragua, Venezuela y como muchas otras cervezas que están intentando abrirse espacio con su propio esfuerzo, tienen que luchar contra el monopolio de la principal marca en el país que es la Polar. La consecuencia con esto, es que muchas buenas cervezas que intentan hace las cosas bien, produciendo un tipo de cerveza original, les cuesta mucho llegar a los establecimientos del resto del país. Es el caso de esta cerveza que cuesta muchísimo encontrarla en las licorerías, y esta marca en particular estuve buscándola incesantemente hasta que finalmente la encontré en un bodegón y solo le quedaba 1 cerveza de esta marca así que no lo pensé 2 veces y he querido probarla para compartirles mis impresiones sobre ella.
Esta es una cerveza tipo Pilsen de 5° grado alcohólico con un proceso de elaboración típico de las pilsners alemanas, ésta es la principal razón por la que quería probarla, pues esta marca de cerveza es directamente influenciada por la colonia alemana en Venezuela llamada Colonia Tovar. Lo primero que llama la atención es el gran diseño de la botella, tiene una gran cantidad de información, sobre su elaboración, el grado de alcohol, la temperatura óptima, color y amargura, me encanta cuando la botella en una cerveza viene con estos detalles porque da una idea del cariño puesto en su elaboración.

Tenía grandes expectativas con esta cerveza, anteriormente había probado una cerveza artesanal de la Colonia Tovar y esperaba que ese sabor único lo podría encontrar aquí, así destapamos esta cerveza y la servimos poco a poco en nuestro tarro de cerveza. El color amarillo pálido ya estaba activando mis papilas gustativas aunque me llamó la atención la poca espuma que formó, pues una cerveza espumosa es sinónimo de ser muy refrescante.

Una vez servida toda la cerveza comencé a sorberla mientras compartía con mis amigos del discord y vaya que estuvo a la altura esta cerveza! Su sabor, refrescante, con aroma herbales, florales y un amargor suave al final le dan ese sabor tan característico a estas cervezas que siguen la misma tradición de la Colonia Tovar. Disfruté cada uno de los sorbos que le di a esta cerveza, lamentablemente la presentación de esta cerveza solo viene en presentación de 250 mL así que me pareció muy poco para lo buena que estaba esta cerveza y solo tenía 1 botella! En resumen, esta cerveza me recordó aquellos años de 2020 en Venezuela cuando estas primeras cervezas que comenzaron como pequeños emprendimientos, llenaron el espacio que las grandes marcas dejaron en el mercado convirtiéndose en alternativas verdaderamente competentes.
Sabía que iba a quedar insatisfecho con aquella cerveza Peregrina y al final fue así, quedé con ganas de más cerveza! Entonces me acordé de la genial reseña que hizo mi estimada @ineyashami sobre la cerveza Morena lager así que decidí darle una oportunidad ya que no iba a quedarme con la sensación de solo tomarme 1 cerveza. Normalmente la mayoría de las veces he visto la presentación de esta cerveza en lata y para ser honesto con ustedes disfruto más tomar las cervezas en botella ya que puedo dejarlas a enfriar y generar el efecto "vestida de novia" que hacen que una cerveza en botella alcance un ese sabor tan refrescante como si fuera un efecto total. Así destapé esta botella y comencé a servirla y la primera señal que me gustó fue la gran cantidad de espuma que generó, ya es casi una regla y sobre todo aquí en países caribeños donde la mayor parte del tiempo hace calor, cuando una cerveza genera esa espuma así con ese efecto cremoso es sinónimo de una bebida refrescante.

Esta cerveza también es Venezolana principalmente del estado Zulia y para mi sorpresa la cervecería que produce esta marca tiene 96 años, es decir que esta próxima a ser centenaria. Su producto más reciente es esta cerveza lager ya que en sus comienzos esta cervecería comenzó haciendo cervezas tipo pilsen como la Regional. Pero en general esta cerveza morena hace gala de su nombre con ese fuerte color ámbar y su aspecto espumoso invita a probarla. Y en efecto es bastante refrescante y se nota ese sabor malteado, con notas dulces y tostadas, es más amarga que la Peregrina pero en general esta bastante bien.

Pasaron los minutos y mientras disfrutaba con mis amigos en torneos de splinterlands degustaba cada sorbo de esta cerveza morena. Ahora, siendo completamente honestos y a manera de cierre, ¿Cual era mejor? ¿Peregrina o Morena? ambas eran bastante refrescante y con un sabor muy característico, pero si tuviera que elegir, me quedo con la cerveza Peregrina, a la cual le doy un valor de 8.5/10 es simplemente una delicia probar esta cerveza y aunque no es tan espumosa como su contra parte Morena, su sabor tan especial me ha enamorado completamente. La cerveza Morena no esta mal tiene para mi un 7.5/10 esta bien para pasar el rato con amigos en una tasca pero no tiene la audacia de intentar algo diferente como si lo hace Peregrina. Bien amigos con esto termino esta reseña doble pero no significa que sea el final para estas 2 marcas pues tienen distintas presentaciones que me he propuesto tráeselas para que puedan conocerlas en futuras #BeerSaturday challenges. Por lo pronto solo me queda desearles buena suerte y salud!
