The Book of Eli (2010)

You know those movies that you see and it’s just that good? Yeah. That’s how good this one is. I saw a clip of it on Facebook and Denzel Washington? What movie is this? Heck! It’s over a decade back in time.

The Book of Eli is a fascinating 2010 post-apocalyptic, Neo-western American action movie by the Hughes brothers and starring Denzel Washington. Set 30 years after civilization is decimated by a nuclear holocaust, Eli (played by Denzel Washington) is on the quest to deliver a book to the West. During his journey is when the action begins.

When I saw that fifteen seconds clip on Facebook, I knew I had to see this movie. Can we talk about how good this cinematic masterpiece is that even over a decade later, it looks like a newly released film? It’s hard to find ones like that!

This wasn’t a go-lucky fight film. I don’t know, were action movies back then more action than what it is now? Because I want more of those.

Anyway, this movie explores the themes of faith, religion, power and the typical good versus evil bit. When I started seeing this movie, I did not know what to expect but it gave me more than I asked for. It is said that this is one of Denzel’s best movies, and I haven’t seen many but I agree with that whole heartedly.

The characters sold me. Especially Solara (Mila Kunis). See, there was a lot of play on the background functionality of cause and effect. Like the ambush or Solara’s reaction to her almost being raped. I know, I’m being a sap but that moment was so silent it was heartbreaking.

Eli is what you’d call a lonesome man. With good reason. He received instructions and he was set out to deliver. Now, the beautiful part of this movie was the careful induction of the atmosphere, the people and the littlest things like the “shakes”. Helped to make me live more in the movie.

I see where expectations come from. You don’t watch movies like those and settle for anything less. This is a solid 9.5/10 for me.

Wow, I absolutely love The Book of Eli! It’s not just an action film it’s deep, powerful, and inspiring. Denzel Washington’s performance gave me chills. The storyline, themes of faith, and the post-apocalyptic setting pulled me in completely. I’ve watched it more than once, and each time, it hits just as hard. This movie is truly unforgettable.
