Superdeep (2020) Review
When I watch a movie, no matter how bad it is, there is always one good thing to say about it. However, with this one, I am speechless. I think this movie was created from a place where boredom meets with money. I did not bother to look into the budgeting because it won’t change the fact that this movie is a huge ass flop.
Superdeep is a Russian sci-fi/horror film set in 1984 about a small team of researchers that go below the surface to find out what secrets lie in the world’s deepest borehole. Anna Federova, Russian epidemiologist, is the main character and I think I read somewhere that this might be based on a true story? Whatever, being a true story or not does not add or subtract to the fact that this movie is a complete waste of time (and resources).
First let us talk about the dialogues. They were so stiff, basically forced in a bid to get to the end result. There was no form of reprieve. Everything was just thrown out there. Not to mention the fact that these dialogues would sometimes morph into what could only be termed as coercion weds lack of creativity. There was no room for anything else.
Second was their continuous failure in delivering the jerk that always came with horror movies and it was so obvious that they were trying to. The fact they released this movie means they thought they did well. There are some things you can’t blame the actors for. I’ll hold the director responsible for this one. I wanted to watch a horror movie. I needed my heart racing and my mind conjuring all sorts of scenarios. However, with this all I saw was one thing happening after and the continuous predictability had me pausing the movie a total of five times. It felt like watching a chick flick.
Even the elements that were supposed to depict the horror and deadliness of the movie ended up a laughing stock. I actually laughed. It was a painful laugh watching the protagonists react in what they thought must have been heartfelt drama to seal the deal and make it a sensational hit. No. All I saw was lack of originality and the generic eclipse of what they would call moments. For fucks’ sake, what was that bullshit the MC pulled in that scene when she went to retrieve the key? Was that supposed to make my heart race, or make me fall off the edge of my seat? I don’t know. What I do know is how I groaned at how the sweep of the angles from the camera made everything feel so… tacky. It was like watching the knockoff version of Stranger Things.
Lastly, was it dubbed? Translated with the use of AI to move the mouths of the actors? I couldn’t ignore the fact that not only were their reactions to almost everything flaccid, what they said and their expressions never seemed to match. It was like watching robots read lines. Couple that with the soundtracks and you have the perfect recipe for disaster.
In conclusion, this movie is old and not gold. It was a waste of two hours of my time. I rate it a 3 out of 10. I hope I will find something better after this.
