Walking the North Market

It was a pretty amazing Friday afternoon when @mrsbozz and I rolled into the Columbus Ohio area last Friday. We had left work around 10 AM and after a few traffic jams due to construction, we pulled into our families driveway round 2:30 or 3:00. My sister in law was out on the porch waiting for us along with our great niece. We spent a bit of time sitting around talking and playing. It turns out they didn't have school that day, so both her and my brother in law were home all day.

It's kind of amazing how fascinated kids are with devices even when they don't have access to them that often. That is the case with our great niece. If she sees you have a phone out, she wants to know what you are up to. Actually, it's pretty funny because what she really wants is to look at all the photos you just took of her. Perhaps she is getting ready for when she is older and she wants to decide what is social media worthy or not.
I say all this to justify the fact that she has my phone in her hand in the above picture. It's not a common occurrence. It's actually the exception more than it is the norm with her. Her mom and grandparents are doing their best to limit her exposure to devices and television in general.

Since we had started our weekend kind of early, and our family had started theirs even earlier due to having work off, we decided it wouldn't be out of line to start drinking a little early. Apparently, Yuengling (the oldest brewery in America) has a new lager that has a hint of lime in it, so it isn't quite a Mexican style, but it still has that kind of feel to it.
I can attest to the fact that it was delicious. After I finished my first one, we decided we would head over to the North Market to get some dinner. The cool thing is, the Bridge Park area allows alcohol as long as you are drinking it from one of their special cups. Given their proximity to that area, my sister in law was smart enough to stock pile some of the cups. With that in mind, we started our stroll with drinks in hand to head to the North Market.

The North Market is pretty similar to what you would expect from a lot of city markets like this. They had a wide variety of places where you could get food as well as a trendy bar down at the end of the market. By the time we got to the market which is about a mile away, our drinks were gone and it was time to top off with another. We also needed to get some dinner.

@mrsbozz got a burrito bowl from the little Mexican place as well as a small thing of chips and queso. She said it was amazing. My sister in law got a stromboli from the Italian place, and my brother in law and I both got Cuban sandwiches from the little Cuban joint they had in the market. I also got some fries with mine and it was pretty amazing. After the fact I was browsing through one of the food communities for Columbus on Facebook and someone asked where the best place in town was to get a Cuban sandwich. I wasn't surprised to see that more than 70% of the responses to the question were directing the person to North Market for Pablo's Havana Cafe.
It was actually a really hard choice for dinner because there were so many amazing options. There was a Korean BBQ place I really wanted to try, but then the Vietnamese place called "Lan Viet" sounded really interesting too. Needless to say, I might have to make my way back to North Market at some point in the future. Check out that link I shared above for all the great eating options there, you will see why it was such a hard decision for me.

After dinner we headed back across the pedestrian bridge to the other side of the Scioto River so we could head to our hotel and get checked in. Clocking in close to 2 miles, I think this is a perfect candidate for a #wednesdaywalk sponsored by @tattoodjay. Between this and the zoo on Saturday as well as walking down to another local bar later that night for a surprise birthday party, I did a fair amount of walking this past weekend. Good thing too, because I needed to burn those calories off somehow!

Children are very addicted to phone even when they cannot operate it. To a point I always hide my phone when ever I see my nieces coming 😊
We do the same as much as we can!
Devices are such a huge issue with kids (and adults for that matter)! My thirteen year old nephew is on his phone quite a bit during our visits. I always think to myself about all the time he's missing out on and how he could be making memories with the out-of-town relatives he barely sees. They finally finished the North Market renovation! I think that will be on my list when I'm visiting in May. : )
That whole area is so different from when my wife and I started visiting down there. It's not really even recognizable along the banks of the Scioto there. Sawmill road was always crazy, but this is even more so, and very upscale. "Pins" is cool if you want to take a short walk down the block to it. The girls are usually pretty good about not being on their devices. We try! I'm probably the last one to talk about it though!
