The biggest bar night of the year

Assuming you don't already know the answer, if I asked you what is the busiest bar night of the year, what would you say? I think for a lot of people they would probably (incorrectly) guess St. Patrick's Day. I mean, it only makes sense right? All the green beer and Irish whisky flowing freely. It's hard to imagine a bigger bar night than that.

In other parts of the world it might be something like Oktoberfest, but honestly, that's more of a festival, so I don't know if you can really count that as a "bar night".

Still not sure?

Well, would you be surprised to find out that the biggest bar night of the year (at least in the US) is Thanksgiving Eve also known as "Blackout Wednesday" or "Drinksgiving". I've always found this a bit weird given the fact that Thanksgiving is such a family oriented holiday. Apparently though with kids heading off to college or coming home to visit family for the holidays, it's common for them to all go out and hang with their old friends at the bar.

I can assure you, that is not where I was on Wednesday night this near. Nor has it ever been where I have spent my Thanksgiving Eve. That isn't to say that I haven't spent my fair share of time at the bar, but never on Thanksgiving Eve. At least as far as I can recall...

Myself, I just can't imagine going so hard Wednesday night and blacking out then having to eat a big Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday. It kind of makes my stomach turn just thinking about it.

Maybe it's just me.

Speaking of Thanksgiving, I just wanted to take a moment on this day to say how thankful I am for The Pub community. @dbooster and I created this out of something rather unpleasant, and I'm glad to see that while one community crumbled, we were able to pick up the pieces and create something pretty great in this one.

If you haven't checked out The Pub Discord yet, I highly encourage you to do so. We have a really eclectic group of faces and names from around the Hive space. I think what I love the most about The Pub is it gives you the ability to actually get to know many of these people (as much as you can digitally) on a different level.

For example, there might be a certain person on HIVE that you have preconceived notions about based on things other people have said. Then you get chatting with them in The Pub and you realize everything you had previously believed isn't really that true.

It's an amazing thing what happens when you actually talk to people!

While The Pub community is growing, I would like to see more content in the HIVE community page. Please feel free to follow the link above and give the community a follow or a subscribe. Even better, you are always more than welcome to post your high quality content in there as long as it follows the rules of the community.

Of course, I can't be one to complain and then not follow my own advice, so I will be making an effort myself to also post more content in The Pub community. This is an open community where pretty much any kind of content is welcome. Again, I just ask that you follow the guidelines that are laid out on the community page.

My hope is that one day we can have enough original content being put in The Pub each day that I can get some of the bigger curation accounts to turn their gaze our way and maybe start upvoting some of the stuff in there. I think it would be good for our members and the blockchain as a whole.

I hope everyone has an awesome Thanksgiving today and if you did participate in the biggest bar night of the year last night, I hope you aren't hurting too much this morning. Either way, if you are looking for a bit of "hair of the dog", maybe find your way to The Pub and have a round!

Ouch, I missed this one: Low effort posts (i.e. Actifit) or tag farming will be muted. 250 words minimum isn't hard to accomplish

Try to use the tag in most of my posts. Should indeed also drop by in the Discord. Will set this up as I write this.

Busiest bar nights here are during carnaval I guess. Definitly during the parade.I guess most pubs will have a turnover which could be compared to 3 or 4 regular months.
The number of pubs are descreasing rapirly over here.

We have new bars come and go all the time too. I just think it is the world today. It's hard to have a place that consistently brings in the customers. Thanks for checking it out and no worries about the rules. We just need to keep it from turning from a Pub into a complete dive bar!

I can believe it. In Scotland it used to Hogmanay or New Year's Eve. I think England probably on Christmas Day as men used to goto the pub while the women cooked and then come back for the Queens speech at 3pm.

That was a couple years ago, but yes, I do find an occasional spot here and there.

Happy Thanksgiving and I will check out your community in discord. Funny when I was in the UK last week we were in a different pub each day. We don't do this here because we are normally not big drinkers and too busy.

My wife and I don't do that sort of thing either usually, but when we are on vacation or out of town we tend to loosen up a little bit!

Hive pub is something we didn't know we needed so bad. And now we have it. Cheers to you, bartender 😉🍻

When I was still in college, one of the busiest nights of the year was actually Christmas day because all the college kids were back home visiting their parents and would go out to see all their old high school friends who were also back visiting from college. I don't know if it is still a thing now but it was a really stupid day to do that also and I guess the police just let everyone get a pass on drink driving that night. A little "don't crash and we wont interfere" sort of gift from the boys in blue.

I can see that, but I guess that is the thinking with the night before Thanksgiving as well. It seems like most college kids would have more time around the holidays, but it's been so long that I have been in college. I know my niece got the whole week off from university this past week. Then she goes back for like two weeks and then is home again. Kind of dumb.

haha. I always felt that way about all holidays but in the case of your niece this could be a huge pain and an expensive one for families. When I was in college if we had a situation like that I would just choose one side or the other and go home only for that part. I was only a 4 hour drive to where my parents lived but that was still too much work to just have to turn around again. Plus, we got really good hours at any jobs that we had during these student holidays so there was a lot of incentive for me to stick around if i could.

She has a five hour drive from Virginia to Ohio, but she doesn't really seem to mind it. I lived at home during college so I can't really relate!
