You probably would have been shocked by my wedding. I think we only spent like $3000 which is super cheap here in the US. Even back then. People go so crazy on their wedding and then they end up being in debt the rest of their lives. We only had beer and wine at our wedding, no liquor, and it was only a handful of our really close relatives and friends, but it was a beautiful day.

Here the marriage is so high every individual wanted to make it grand....I really dislike them. Wondering there are better use of money...a low affair wedding is more sensible. The issue is not only for wedding we have similar pattern during death rituals...and things are worsening with each year. On my dad's death we spend, around $6500 ....which i feel is useless..

Wow, yeah, that is a lot of money. It's probably hard to break with tradition though.

People does not care about tradition much..I see the Brahman who attended the funeral had loot intent. Now a days there is trend to organise 'garur puran' a 3 days affair can cost approx $1000. ... a sorrow and grief time can be money making for others and a chance for community to have a fiesta on the 10 -11-12 days of funeral.
