Making the right call

PXL_20240706_040941394.jpg

There's a lot of ticked off people in my neck of the woods this morning. In their opinion, we probably shouldn't have had school today, but when you look at the facts, the person who runs the district made the right call. I think what makes it hard for them is that a good number of districts surrounding us did close down for the day this morning. "If them, why not us?" That's a really poignant phrase in this day and age. Everyone feels like they are entitled to something, and the selfishness is at an all time high.

Snow day, ice day, cold weather day, I have to report no matter what, so it doesn't really matter to me whether we have school on a particular day or not. That being said, I still think the right call was made. Temperatures are close to that -20 degree F mark, but not below it which is the defacto threshold for schools in the state. At the end of the day, you have a job to do, and if it's that big of a deal for you to show up and do it, maybe you should move along.

As for me, I'll be here "making the bacon" as they say. I feel like the same thing applies to the crypto markets right now. As I mentioned last week, the FUD machine seems to be as active as ever. The world is in a flux of uncertainty, and the crypto markets have been reflecting that. Either that or they are just being outright manipulated. Maybe a little of both.

The sudden drop of Bitcoin down to the $80,000 range was a bit of a surprise for me, but I try not to let it bug me as much as I used to. The price of HIVE slapping down near $.08 is a totally different story. I can appreciate it being hard to know what to do in times like this. Personally, I try to view it all the same way I do a bear market. A really really really long drawn out bear market. You just keep building, because honestly what else can you do.

Hi Ho Silver!

The spot price of silver took a sharp dive overnight under the $100 mark after pushing closer to $120 this past week. I see this morning it is back up over the century mark closing in on $104 per ounce. I think it will likely rebound. Despite the fact that stocks across the board are having a amazing start to the year, I am not surprised to see that Fortuna Silver Mining (FSM), and Kinross Gold (KGC) are struggling a little bit.

Those are pretty long term holds for me, so I am not too worried about them. They seem to be pretty established companies and I think in the long term they will be okay. I also think silver will likely rebound over the next week or so and push new all time highs. This isn't financial advice though.

Splinterlands

I participated in a Splinterlands Tournament for the first time in a long time the other day. It was one of those Wild Anytime tournaments and it felt kind of weird using my regular foil cards since I have gotten so used to just using my Gold Foil cards in brawls. I kind of forgot how many options there are when it comes to building your team.

image.png

The tournament had an entry fee of something like 200 DEC, and as you can see I earned a 26th place finish as well as 53 SPS. Which actually equates to something like $.50 USD, so I don't know if I can really say the tournament was worth it. I'm not sure what the price of DEC is right now, but in the end I am guessing I probably broke even. I was hoping tournaments might be a way to earn some more SPS, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

In other news, I pulled a Conflicts card with my wagons the other day, but upon further investigation, it looks like two of my wagons are broken. I didn't even realize that was a thing until just now. Apparently I have to buy or make some repair kits to fix my wagons. I don't even know. I guess that shows how mildly detached from the game I have become. If anyone can give me the TL:DR on wagon repair kits, I'd really appreciate it!

NuScale Power

My favorite Small Modular Nuclear Reactor company SMR had their 4th quarter earnings report meeting yesterday. It seems they are still unable to turn a profit with their earnings falling short of their $1.85 projection by $1.74. It's a rough time for nuclear companies with so much stuff being in flux right now, but I have a feeling once a lot of the regulatory stuff gets out of the way and production starts happening, things should turn around a bit. The price of SMR continues to hover around the $20 mark which is down from the all time high near $50, but still up from the initial offering price of $10 per share.

Holozing

I finally hit the point where I have 1 million ZING staked and another million ZING pooled in the liquidity pool with SWAP.HIVE. I am not sure what I am going to do now. I think a lot of us are still eagerly waiting for the game to be released. I am kind of leaning towards selling some of the ZING that I earn, but it's hard when we don't know how much we are going to need to play the game. I don't want to short myself, but it would be cool to take some profits. Yet another instance where I have to decide if I am making the right call as the title of this post indicates.

Cosmos/ATOM

I was fooling around with some of my old wallets the other day and I remembered that I had some ATOM tokens staked earning something like 18% to 21% interest in that wallet. I collected my rewards and realized it amounted to something like $40 USD. That's actually not too bad for only having 140 or so tokens staked. I can't say what the time period was, but it got me thinking about the days when ATOM was trading 10x where it is now over $20 USD. I'm pretty sure @tengolotodo had some ATOM holdings, so I wonder if he is earning some nice interest. Even at the current price of $2, having the right amount staked could bring you a nice passive income.

That being said, I know there has been a lot of criticism of the ATOM token due to some shady stuff they did with Elon or Trump and the WLFI token or whatever that is. Plus, the price being $2 now instead of $20 is not that great, but maybe that just means it's a good time to buy?... Again, not financial advice!

I'm of course highly biased and anyone can see that I don't sell zing, but I don't hold it against anyone if they decide to take profit, especially with hive being this low one would expect that it'd go up eventually and maybe when that happens you'd get more zing for the same amount of hive. I'm just personally not willing to take that risk haha, also why I haven't pooled any in case of a sharp random pump we've seen in the past it may mean a lot less zing in my LP suddenly. But maybe it's something I should get involved in simply due to the big apr and maybe I can be content with the staked amount I have that it's okay if I lose a portion of my zing in the LP.

I still haven't decided yet. In the grand scheme of things I don't need the money and it's not like it is going to be life changing for me anyway. The APR on the pool is pretty attractive right now. I think even if I did take a loss from a huge swing, I have made enough from the pool over the past year or so to cover it. That being said, I like my return, so don't go jumping into the pool and diluting all my dividends! :)

Can't promise anything but if I do I plan on buying the half of zing I put in there and not unstaking it. :P

I understand kids complaining that school wasn't cancelled. I did the same when I was a kid. But these days it seems like parents also complain, which I don't understand. As a parent I want my kids to get an education and I trust the school will be warm, so going there is a win. But I don't know. I'm out of touch, I suppose.

Believe it or not, it's mostly the staff that do the complaining. They are honestly the worst!

Based on the title combined with the cover image I did expect that the story would go over referees. Like often, you did fool me with this one :)
It is easier to critize a decision than to make a decision. People do want that another person takes the decision so they won't get the blame. And rarely decision are so clear and obvious that nobody nags about them.
This goes hand in hand with selfishness (strange word to write for a non English native writer).

Concerning crypto, you are already in winter, and I do think that a crypto winter is around the corner. During my lunch walk I was thinking about the value of Hive. Hive is created out of bits and bytes, but besides some games and the social pride of having as much as possible there isn't an actual use case behind it. But I don't care, I do like the interactions we have here on the Hive blockchain.

I figured people would think that about the first image. I wanted the meaning to be a bit implied. I wouldn't want to be in the superintendent's position to have to make that call. It seems like a no win situation to me. Yeah, crypto is just whatever at this point. I'm not banking on anything anymore besides BTC. Most everything else will likely go to zero.

The silver swings are wild. It feels like everything is just messy right now.

People are people, always looking for shortcuts, handouts and so on. When I was a kid, we had -23C and the school was never closed. Not once.

We were right around -27 C this morning I think. There wasn't much wind which I think it what made it not quite so bad.

Silver right now is in the equivalent of the Alt Season the wild swings are indication that all the speculative money are in it. And you know how alt seasons end... Of course it would not be a draw down of 90% but 50-70% off the top would not surprise me at all, so be careful and take some profits when you think it is getting moon shot prices...

Anything crypto right now is in the toilet, I view this prices as an opportunity to build up my positions in BTC and SOL.

BTW here you can track all the crypto ETFs:

Thanks. I don't really own too much SOL. I'm worried the hype might be over for that one, but I might pick up a bit too. I haven't decided yet. I probably better hury since things are starting to go back up now.

I think at this point this is a blue chip crypto just like ETH so no huge runs but safer long term...
Silver is acting crazy, it is no longer a safe heaven asset and is a purely risk on speculative play:

Silver 26% drop in a day and gold down around 10% these are now meme coins :)

Yes, people clearly playing games there. I think BNB has some benefits too, but as you pointed out, I don't think there is an ETF tied to it.

You must be a jack of many trades. The day's report is filled. Of all the above, the pot of Bacon appealed to me most. I love it grilled.

Yes, jack of many, master of none! I was kind of annoyed I didn't get a shot of the bacon after I cooked it. I have a grilling and smoking community here on HIVE you should check out sometime if you haven't already.

In regards to Splinterlands, you made an "amazing" ROI on that tournament as 200 DEC is worth around 15 SPS tokens and you got almost x4 of 53 SPS tokens:

To bad that cold is hanging on like that, but a work day is a great way to get things done. Silver is down to $83 at the moment, the correction we all knew was coming. But it may be a nice buying opportunity because it will likely surge again. Interesting times to say the least.

NuScale does need to get some profitable contracts going. You can't run a business forever in the red unless you plan to sell out, and then they usually fudge the books to look better than they are. Crossing my fingers they will get something going here soon!

I haven't bothered with the wagons, they seem to break and you have to fix them. Too much to worry about.

Way to make $40 on the old ATOM wallet, $40 is $40. You can buy a nice bottle with that cash to sip on. Maybe not Eagle Rare, but something good! I hope you have a great weekend and it's not too cold!

Yeah, I am not surprised by the silver thing and even though I haven't been following it as much as some, I think it will recover. NuScale is just confounding, but I know it is a long play at this point. I hope you have an awesome weekend too!

Yep, time to make the bacon baby! Haha.

I am just invested in Hive these days, and don't even pay much attention to the price of it anymore. It will do what it does. Same with silver. I will sell at a certain price and buy at a certain price. Otherwise, it will do what it will do.

I haven't even checked what my stocks are doing. I think I am invested in both those you mentioned as well.

My traditional finance portfolio is doing pretty good right now. Which is good because I am going to need it eventually! I really want to set some targets for selling and buying, but things are just so dismal now.

Yeah, i get what you are saying. I would like to see Hive start doing much better, along with some of my stocks. But they seem to have not gotten the memo like the rest of the market has.

The calling off of schools for being cold is a little silly for me. I didn't get to stay home when it was cold, your ass went to school! Lol. I know that's full of issue these days, sadly surrounding people not dressing their kids well enough to handle it.

Unless power gets knocked out, I don't get those days off so it doesn't matter much to me. Kids should only get snow days round these parts!

A lot of it has to do with how many kids a district has that walk to school like in a city setting. They also worry about buses getting stuck and then the temps being so cold, but we didn't get days like that either when I was a kid.

Having to report to work no matter what. Yeah sounds familiar. Sonsabitches make me race in all sorts of weather. I try to tell them nobody gives a shit but they just keep sending me back out there. What asshats!

Waste? WTF are you talking about? I brought in like 1 person and it only took about $1 million to do it. Now I'm no rocket scientist but if my calculations are correct then with only $5 million I could bring in 5 whole people! Suck on that!

I did get rid of most of my ATOM when it was considerably higher than it trades at now. The APRs are all well and good, but if the value of the coin is dropping and dropping there is no point getting APRs was my view. If it wasn't for enjoying the social side of Hive and most of the people here, I would have done the same thing here.
