Work first, play later

I spent the majority of my morning this past Sunday at the university property where my friend is working building a disc golf course. Right now it is only a very rough 9 holes, but they have plans for it to end up being a full 18 hole course with both long and short tee pads and baskets. Over the past few months they have been putting a ton of time into clearing trees to create better lines for your disc to fly.
It's a delicate balance to leave enough stuff to make it challenging without making it too frustrating. They placed the first ten (one of them is a practice basket for putting) baskets about a month ago and the weekend before this one they had a guy bring a excavator out so they could pull stumps out of the way. They could have also used something to pack back down all the earth that the excavator tore up, but I am not going to be too picky.
Yesterday I got to meet the guy who helped design the course and we spent the majority of our time clearing the fairways and the cart paths between the baskets and the next tee pads. It was mostly just picking up sticks, weed whacking brush, and blowing leaves out of the way.

It's actually amazing how big of a difference it makes blowing the leaves out of the way. You wouldn't think so, but it makes the path between the baskets and down the fairway "pop" a bit more which is a good thing. The course is still really rough and until now it has been a bit difficult finding your way from one hole to the next. We also added some signage that points in the direction of each hole.
I've been talking to @mrsbozz about it and I think that we are going to end up sponsoring a hole. This will require us to donate a bit of money, but those funds will help pay for proper signage, as well as the cement they need for the tee pad and things like that.
Eventually, they also want to chip up the tress that they have cut down to make lanes for the discs and use that mulch to lay down on the paths between the holes. There is still a ton of work to be done and they are relying solely on volunteers to get things in order. It's been exciting watching the course take shape over the past few months. I have played it a few times as well. I was actually there when my buddies son got the first ace ever on the course. It was a sweet shot that landed right in the basket.
In the thirty years or so that I have been playing disc golf, it was the first time I have ever seen someone get a hole in one, so I am happy it happened on this course that my friend has so much invested in!
The hope is that one day this course will bring in players from all over the world for tournaments and things like that.
