Unexpected Fortunes

One of my really good friends had some pretty amazing news this past month or so. He used to be a high school English teacher, but after he retired he went to work for a local university. If you follow my main account, you might recognize this scenario because I just wrote a post about a job opening he sent to me. This isn't about that though.

A short time ago he worked with some students at the university to submit a grant hoping to get some money to build a disc golf course on some of the property they have there. It's mostly wooded area with some walking paths through it and the goal of this grant money is to bring more people onto the university property. The hope is that they see how awesome the campus is and decide they want to go there themselves or send their kids there.

It started off pretty small, they were only planning on doing nine holes with baskets and concrete tee pads, but it has quickly blossomed into something truly spectacular from there. A few weeks ago I met my friend at the property and he walked the front nine with me to show me what the general layout was going to be.

After getting the grant they were lucky enough to hook up with a guy who moved from South Carolina up to Michigan. He has experience designing disc golf courses and he has been a true boon to the project.

After doing the walk through of the course, my friend called me the other day to ask me if I had heard the news about the course. Thinking that something bad had happened, I told him know and asked him for the "deets". I didn't say "deets", I just used that for this post.

Anyway, turns out after posting some stuff on social media, another alumni from the university reached out to him to ask more information about the course. After explaining to him about it starting as a nine hole course, the alumni said "I'll pay for the back 9 holes". My buddy was floored at the generosity, and also at the new batch of work that was going to be on his plate.

What started as a simple 9 hole course is quickly becoming a 18 hole technical course with top of the line baskets and what will eventually be some really nice concrete tee pads. They are going to hold off on pouring concrete until they are sure the placement is optimal.

As of Sunday they had four baskets placed with one of them being the practice putting basket at the front of the course. I'm really looking forward to getting back out there and playing the holes that they have cleared. There is still a lot of work to be done and my hope is that once things die down for me I can get out there and lend a hand.

You better believe I will be taking photos and sharing about it here!
