The Last Push

It was a full weekend of action in the Women's College World Series and the fact that I got to watch some of the games with my nieces was even better. Oh, my brother in law too. Being former and current players and coaches, they always have some really valuable insight into the game. I always like seeing the things that they find interesting and the things that they can't stand.

I'll try to keep this short for you because I know it is Monday and all and like me you are probably still recovering from the weekend.

Friday we saw two games in the continuation of double elimination bracket play. Texas took down Mississippi State 4 to 0 in a pretty one sided game and UCLA hammered Arkansas 11 to 0 in an absolutely one sided game. It was almost painful to watch. In fact, I shut it off before it was even over. UCLA jumped to 7 to 0 lead in something like the first or second inning and it was game over from there on out.

These two games were elimination games, so it knocked Mississippi State and Arkansas out of the tournament after their losses on Thursday.

On Saturday we had Tennessee take down one of the favorites Texas Tech 2 to 1, and Alabama beat Nebraska 5 to 1. I am not really a fan of Alabama, but apparently the coach of the team is really cool and is the kind of coach that they would love to play for. I think that says a lot coming from my nieces as their main coach growing up was their dad.

Finally, on Sunday we saw Nebraska exit the tournament after a loss to Texas 3 to 1. Then Texas Tech sent UCLA home after a 9 inning 8 to 7 victory. With no Big 10 teams left in the running, I am not really sure who I am going to cheer for.

Today we have the final games with Texas facing Tennessee and Alabama facing Texas Tech. Both Texas and Texas Tech have to win twice if they want to move on since Tennessee and Alabama have zero losses so far.

At this point, I'd honestly be okay with any team except Texas Tech moving on. I know that they had some bad blood with Florida and while a lot of that can definitely be attributed to Florida, I also think that Texas Tech are a bit "dirty". They are good yes, but they have a cockiness and a kind of attitude that goes beyond just being pumped about the game and drifts into the poor sportsmanship category.

Maybe I am totally misjudging, but some of the things I have heard and seen don't sit too well with me. That being said, my nieces are fans of the team, so that is also something I need to consider. At this point, there isn't much I can do though, just sit back and watch it all unfold.
