That's a sweep

Just like that the division II softball championship is all over. I had been hoping this might be the year that the Tiffin Dragons took it all, but sadly they didn't have much luck. Instead, after just two games in a best of three series, the team from Saint Leo has won top honors. If you follow Tiffin softball, you should know that they are no stranger to Saint Leo. Typically they face off against the team from this university each Fall or very early Spring when they head down to Florida to play a few games over the course of a week or two.

It's a big road trip for the Tiffin Dragons and based on the outcomes over the past few years, I am not surprised to see Saint Leo up in that top spot.

They had a monster game on Tuesday hammering McKendree into submission 15 to 4. While a loss like that can be pretty demoralizing, the cool thing about softball is each game is a new game and teams can just as easily bounce back and win the next game as much as they can succumb to despair.

Unfortunately, for McKendree, the fight just wasn't there and last night they lost their final game of the season 5 to 2 against Saint Leo.

In case like me you have never heard of them before, Saint Leo is a Catholic university down in Florida about 35 minutes north of Tampa. The town is actually called Saint Leo and that makes sense why they usually play them. I just did a quick search via Google and according to the Gemini AI, Tiffin has an overall record of 2-6 against Saint Leo over the past five seasons. Better than I would have thought.

Actually, looking at the data, I think that is wrong. It looks more like a record of 1 and 7 to me. The last time they beat Saint Leo was in 2024 with a double header split. All the other contents have been sweeps by Saint Leo. Except for 2021 when they didn't play each other.

Which takes us back to division I softball. Texas and Texas Tech played their first game last night and the Longhorns came away with the victory 7 to 3. It seems Texas is firing on all cylinders right now and I think it is going to be tough for Texas Tech to bounce back. This is definitely the case of a team peaking at the right time I think. You just never know though.

We will find out tonight when the second game of the series is played at 8 PM EST.
