Southern Hospitality

My wife and I had the distinct pleasure to take a bit of an early Spring Break this past weekend and drive down to Virginia to watch our niece play softball with her university team down in Radford, VA. Radford is a beautiful little town on the banks of the New River and though they don't have a football team, they have pretty much every other sport in a wonderful complex you would expect from a division I school.
This isn't the first time we have been down to Radford, but it is the first time we have been able to watch her play on their home field. When we went down Radford in the fall, they were still renovating the softball field, so it was all tore up and you couldn't really get a good idea of what it was going to look like.
They put in a lot of work and now it is all ready to go and let me tell you, it is absolutely beautiful.

As you can hopefully see from the photos, it turned out quite well. The photos are not showing up for me in the editor right now, but I know that HIVE has been having some issues with images in general lately, so hopefully it is just a snag there and not something that will cause my post to just be a lot of text and no images.
The home stand this past weekend consisted of three games against Presbyterian College out of Clinton South Carolina. Their mascot is the Blue Hose which is apparently some kind of Scottish Warrior, though it sounds funny when they call them the blue hose (since it sounds more like "hoes"). It's also an interesting counterpoint to the Radford Highlander mascot. They had one game on Friday afternoon, and then a double header on Saturday at 1 PM and 3 PM. Unfortunately, the only game that our niece got some play time in was Friday. She was able to pinch hit for one of the other players and she got hit by a pitch which put her on first base. For some reason the coach then pulled her out of the game, but whatever, it was nice to see her on the field.
I'm obviously biased, but I think she has a lot to offer the team if they would just give her the chance. Perhaps it will come in time. It kind of feels wrong hoping someone gets hurt so she can get more play time. So I guess patience is the key!
They won the first game 5 to 0 on Friday, and then on Saturday they run ruled PC 10 to 2 in 5 innings. It's almost too bad they couldn't have done that in the second game as we were planning on leaving right after the game for the five hour drive back to Ohio for the night.
Unfortunately, the third game went a full seven innings, but it was still a win for Radford 12 to 9 over Presbyterian. In case you are keeping track, that's a sweep. It was a heck of a weekend and although we likely won't be able to get back down to see her this spring, I am already looking forward to making our way back to Radford. Perhaps in the Fall again.
The Radford Highlanders are back in action again tonight against ETSU in a double header.
