Soggy Sunday

Unlike most people across the nation on Sunday afternoon I wasn't watching The Masters. Instead, I was relaxing on the couch with my wife trying to finish the current book I was reading. I think we had some softball game on TV and I was about twenty pages away from finishing when suddenly my phone rang. It was my buddy asking if I wanted to join him and his son for a round of disc golf at one of the local courses.

Given the amount of rain we have gotten lately, I knew the conditions were going to be pretty rough, but I gladly said yes and headed to the course that we determined was probably the least flooded. I got there five to ten minutes before the other guys and I thought I would do some practice putting on the basket they have set aside for that sort of thing when I happened up on the photo you see above.

Talk about a water hazard right?

I decided to just take a seat on the picnic table and wait for them to show up. Although I have been playing disc golf for close to 30 years now, I was still a bit nervous given this was my first round of the year.

The course was pretty wet in a lot of places I didn't expect. Unfortunately, my shoes were not very water proof, so by the end of the round I found myself with some rather wet socks. I also lost a disc on one of the holes that has a small creek running along side it. I tried to avoid it as much as I could, but sure enough my disc hit a tree and went right into the creek. The water is so muddy and murky that you couldn't really tell where the disc was. Plus, it was running pretty swift, so it's possible my disc got carried down stream anyway. We may have been looking in the wrong place for it.

Despite all that, I still had a pretty good time and I ended up throwing an 11 over par which isn't great, but also not too bad for me on this course. The difficulty was definitely up a notch given areas you would normally lay up weren't accessible because they were underwater.

My friend ended up with a score of 3 over and I think his son did even better than that. This was the first time I was able to use the UDisc mobile app in conjunction with my Garmin ForeRunner watch and it turns out I ended up walking a total of 2.5 miles through the whole round. I love that I am now able to track the distance I walk in my rounds. As soon as I got home, I got online and I ordered myself a pair of water proof hiking shoes from Noriv8. They showed up yesterday and after trying them on I am really excited to get out on one of the local courses and break them in.

I was really hoping to have a better round than I did, but I am sure I will improve as we progress through spring and summer. Sometimes it just takes a bit for that muscle memory to kick back in!
