Well, well, well, just like that the World Cup is officially over. Believe it or not, I am actually a little bummed. I am really sad I didn't get to see the third place game on Saturday. It looks like this was really exciting based on the score. I think that is the kind of soccer game that most American's can handle. Six to four is no joke. That's just a whole lot of scoring.
Meanwhile, yesterday the finals took place and though I didn't get to watch the third place game, I did get to watch the championship game. I'm quite happy with the way it all worked out. I can't say for sure, but it really felt like the officials were giving Argentina every opportunity to stay in the game. They just couldn't. That being said, I think the fact that it didn't go into penalty kicks was a benefit for Spain.
I know they are highly trained athletes, but with basically zero shots on goal by Argentina, I don't think the Spain goalie was quite as alert or ready as the guy from Argentina who already had some pretty amazing saves under his belt. Well, sort of amazing saves. If anything, it looked like Spain was kicking the ball right to the goalie.
Like maybe it was scripted to go into overtime to make it more exciting for people? I'm just saying...
Personally, I think the game was over well before it actually ended. Spain had what looked like a pretty clean goal that they wiped off the board. No, I'm not talking about the off sides on the second goal, I'm talking about the first goal that they didn't count before the actual first goal happened.
Due to some pretty spectacular acting by the Argentinian goalie, they ended up not counting it. I don't know he seemed to jump back up pretty quick once he realized the net was open before he quickly collapsed again after they made the goal. It seemed like a sham to me.
I'm actually glad Spain ended up winning because personally if they had lost it would have been more because Argentina got lucky or was given the game versus them actually being the better team. There would have been a pretty legitimate excuse for Spain to claim they got robbed.
In fact, anytime I would have written a post about it, there would have been a big fat asterisk from me after mentioning an Argentina win. Zero doubt in my mind it would have been a fix.
Anyway, it's all over now. In something like two years we have the women's world cup which I actually might find myself watching more than I have in the past.

That’s been the feeling throughout the whole tournament. If you believe in that particular conspiracy then it’s probably less favouritism for the side as a whole and more about keeping Messi in the tournament as long as possible.
The way it sounds either way it was going to be historic. Either we get a team that hasn't won in a while, or we get a repeat which also hasn't happened in a while. I'm still glad Spain clinched it.
