Late Summer Football

Man, what a great weekend. I honestly am not sure I could have scripted it any better. Sometimes, we just need those weekends where we stick around the house, do some work, watch some football, and just kind of forget that the rest of the world exists. Sort of...

I mean these days it is pretty hard to forget that the rest of the world exists. Especially given how selfish some people are. You'll have to keep an eye on my main account to find out more about that.

College football hit week three this past weekend and at this point I think some things are starting to become painful obvious for some of my favorite teams. Well one of my favorite teams for sure. The Michigan State Spartans were able to pull out a win over Youngstown State, but dang if their defense doesn't have a lot of work to do. I'm not saying the Penguins (yep, that's their mascot) is an inferior team, but they sure did score a lot of points on their power conference rival this weekend.

If you can't hold Youngstown state to a score or two, you don't have a lot of hope against a Big Ten that appears to be stacked with teams this season. It looks like Oregon got bumped down to the number 6 spot, but you still have a handful of teams in the top 10 which isn't anything to scoff at.

In addition to that, you've got a whole battery of other teams in the top 25, so the Big Ten is looking pretty good this season. It's looking a bit iffy that Michigan State will have a chance to crack that. I'm still not sure Chiles is "our guy" and as I said, the defense needs to pick things up. Yes, State is now 3-0, but man, I just don't know.

Meanwhile, Indiana slaughtered Indiana State 73 to 0, which honestly isn't that surprising, but I think it goes to show how Indiana is slowly starting to become more than just a basketball school. Probably the best game of the weekend for me was the Georgia Tech/Clemson game. Man, that thing ended with a bang. It was such a clutch and exciting game. I really enjoyed watching the end of it. If you get the chance, do a quick YouTube search. It was pretty cool.

We are still in that cupcake season where most teams aren't playing significant games, but there are always a few exceptions. The Tennessee versus Georgia game is a great example of that. It went into overtime and Georgia ended up winning 44 to 41. I really feel bad for the Volunteers kicker who could have ended the game but wasn't able to convert.

If things stay on the same trajectory, one of the biggest games of the year will be Ohio State vs. Penn State. I'm really looking forward to that. I have yet to watch an Illinois game yet this season, but sitting in the number 9 spot, they might be another team to watch out for. Like I said, things aren't going to be easy for Michigan State once conference play starts.

Probably the other really exciting game of the weekend was (10) Texas A&M vs (24) Notre Dame. I started watching this game as you can see in the opening photo. It's in the upper right corner, but eventually I started drifting to other things and I ended up not watching the end. Seeing that the Aggies won 41 to 40 kind of makes me wish I had stuck with it.

Everything else fell just about the way you would expect for a cupcake weekend.

Things should really pick up next week when conference play kicks into gear.
