Is this thing on?
I've gotta be honest, I'm really disappointed in the lack of response I have gotten from my post yesterday. I guess it's just kind of indicative of how HIVE is going these days, but given the number of people here who love soccer, I thought I would get a bit more help. It seems there has only been one person so far who really wants to enlighten me on the finer points of off sides, though I am not sure if they really care or they just like the upvotes I give them when they comment.
All of that aside, I did find myself watching the Argentina England match yesterday. Actually, it was @mrsbozz who had it on when I got home from work, but holy cow, what a game. As you know, I don't watch nearly enough soccer to have any opinion or even come close to knowing what to expect. I think it would have been cool to have an all UK/Europe final, but I guess most people know that you just can't sleep on Argentina.
It was a bit heartbreaking to see it play out that way, but I think deep down everyone knew you just couldn't count Messi and crew out with that much time on the clock. It was just a matter of time. Like some great inevitability of the universe or something like that.
So now we have a Spain/Argentina final that is happening at some point in the future. I honestly don't know. Anyone got a date and EST time on that?
Meanwhile, I went back and looked at the latest comment from my last post and I take back what I said before. I think the person really is trying to help me understand, but as I mentioned, I don't know enough about the game to sort it out without photos. I need some illustrations to help me out and so far those haven't come.
Which also led to another question. How far in advance does the offsides have to occur before they call it. As I said, I feel like it is quite arbitrary. Like if it doesn't lead to a goal, they just let it slide, but if it leads to something positive for the one team they call it and stop play. Is that how it works?
If that is the case, I think that ambiguity fully explains why people find it so hard to wrap their head around the concept. If it's a clear cut thing where you stop play immediately and call it every single time then okay, but if you let play continue for three minutes then you finally call it, that's just nuts!
