Intense!

As I alluded to yesterday, Monday was a pretty intense day as far as the division I softball tournament went. It was Texas Tech versus Alabama and Texas versus Tennessee to see who would move on to the championship game. There were a couple things that were really unique about these contents. The first being that both the "underdog" teams were the ones that ended up making it through to the next round. The second being that both of those teams were from Texas.

Of course, underdog is a relative term there. The main point was that both Alabama and Tennessee were unbeaten so far in the tournament. That meant that Texas and Texas Tech had to beat their respective team not once, but twice to make it on to the final round. They did.

I remember a while ago I was talking about how I didn't think that Texas was the team that was going to be in the finals. Despite their having won the championship last year, they just didn't seem like they were playing as well as some of the other teams in the tournament. I guess I was wrong, because here they are once again in the finals.

They took down Tennessee 5 to 2 and 4 to 0 to move on to the championship game.

Then we have Texas Tech who beat Alabama 5 to 4 and 2 to 0 to make their way to the showdown with Texas. At this point I kind of have to cheer for Texas I think. As good as Texas Tech is, there have been some reasonable issues raised about their sportsmanship. I don't know if I can look past that. While it would be cool to see Canady win a title, I don't know if all of the other players deserve it. Of course they made it this far, so one might argue with that assessment, but we all know that personal opinions are often tied quite tightly to sports.

I would have preferred to see UCLA or Nebraska in the finals, but that's just me being a Big Ten fan. Speaking of Nebraska, news just dropped last night that their ace pitcher played pretty much the whole season pregnant. While that might seem shocking, my niece did the same thing (unbeknownst to her), and the baby turned out just fine. I'm sure if the Nebraska player knew, she was much more careful about how she performed in the tournament.

Action starts tonight in the best of three final series at 8 PM on ESPN.

If you are a fan, you should definitely check it out. If you aren't a fan, you might find yourself becoming one...
