In Full Swing!

Before we get started, I have a confession to make. I did watch a bit of soccer the other night. The World Cup match between Uruguay and Cape Verde was on and with nothing much better to watch, I decided to stop on that channel. It ended up being a 2 to 2 tie, but the good news is, I got to see most of the goals that were scored. That's a pretty rare thing for soccer to be honest, so I consider myself lucky.

Additionally, I'd like to extend a big congrats to Bryce Harper for hitting his first career cycle on the 20th of June. That's pretty impressive especially given the fact that Harper isn't a spring chicken in the league anymore. At 33 years old, he is one of the old timers now. Apparently he still has it. At least against the Mets. If you aren't familiar with the terminology, hitting for the cycle means you hit a single, double, triple, and home run all in the same game. A standard cycle means they can be in any order. A natural cycle means you hit them in the order I listed above.

The final score of that game was Phillies 15, Mets 3 by the way.

Meanwhile, as I mentioned in the post from my main account, my niece and her father were coaching a softball team at a tournament over in Cleveland this past weekend. Before that, they had a two game scrimmage earlier in the week against another team. They dropped the first game 1 to 4, but came back to dominate the second game 12 to 2. They carried that momentum with them into the weekend for their first big tournament.

The Revolution Elite 16U team got started with a big 10 to 2 win over a Unity Crickard team followed by a tight 6 to 5 win over Cincy Doom Cobb. It was a big win for the team because the Doom organization is usually no joke. My niece was saying that they were hitting the crap out of the ball, so it was good they were able to hold them to just five runs.

They finished the game with a 4 to 4 tie with a Tennessee Mojo team. This set them up to be the top seeded team in their portion of the bracket. They won their first bracket play game Saturday night 6 to 2 against a Pittsburgh Predators team.

Unfortunately, on Sunday morning they came up against a hot Lasers team which is the organization my other niece used to play for. They dropped the game 10 to 3, and ended their weekend a bit earlier than they had planned. The other unfortunate thing about the weekend is the fact that the coaches had to deal with ridiculous shenanigans from parents complaining about their kids playing time. At this level, you are doing what you can to get the team wins. If you aren't at the top of your game and you want playing time, you should be in a rec league.

Word on the street is that last game was totally win-able, but the other coach caved to the pressure and put in players who were having a pretty miserable weekend statistically. It likely cost them the game. I hope those parents realize that now. I doubt it though.
